Help: Diagnose drill press problems

Hey guys,

So I bought a new drill press from Princess Auto (Canadian Harbour Frieght equivalent). Fired it up, and it builds up speed and then seems to cut out, and the rev up again, and then cut out, etc...

I don't want to disassemble it and take it back to the store if it is something I can adjust/fix. It is set on the fastest speed (13000 rpm or something).

Here is a link to a little video I took of it:

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Are you sure it’s 13,000 RPM? It would have to have some precision bearings to run at that RPM.

Does the motor run at a consistent RPM when the belt isn’t driving the spindle?
How does it run at the lowest RPM setting?
If it’s okay with the above two parameters, it has to be the spindle bearings.

Sorry, I don't know WHAT I was thinking, it is set at 3840 rpm.

I will test it and see if it does this with the motor not connected to the drive pulleys, or at lower spindle speeds.

Thanks

I might venture a guess of a bad run winding, cap or centrifugal switch. The motor should start on the run and start winding then the start winding should cut out at 805 or so of rated speed. If the run winding or related wiring bad when the motor makes 80% of speed the centrifugal switch opens and cuts the start winding. In you case the run winding does not seem to be energized and the motor slows as 80% is met after it slows some the start switch closes and the start winding kicks back in. Check the connections in the motor and on the centrifugal switch. Test the cap if you have a cap tester. Return the thing if no go

So, reading between the lines, you had it set too low and it was bogging down as a result? Is that what the "rev limiter" does?

Sorry, not a mechanic...

I'd check for a finger of a little Chinese boy stuck in the motor.

Not being sarcastic, but are you sure it is fully plugged in? I've seen them do that when the cord was about halfway out...
Worth checking.
If it is in fully, and on a wall plug, not an extension cord I would take it back.
Good luck with it.

Looks like you're going back to princess auto. Maybe then can exchange just the head of the press so you don't have to tear everything down... i would call ahead though.

I agree guys, looks like it is going back. I thought if it was something simple that I had done putting it together or something it'd be less hassle.

I'll just tear it down to manageable pieces and back it goes, oh well.

Thanks
