Help disassembling a SK ratchet

I recently started the job of rebuilding and lubing some of the ratchets I've been collecting. One particular 1/4" SK ratchet was pretty gunked up. I attempted to remove the c-clip (?), only to have one tab break off , and about 1/3 of the clip with the other tab. So there appears to be about 1/2 to 1/3 of a clip still holding this ratchet together - how to I get it out? I've tried running a wire around the groove to "push" the clip out with no success. Light persuasion from a hammer on the selector doesn't seem to help either. Any other suggestions?

Ya, I had to deal with the same thing on mine. I just pulled the whole thing out. Keep pulling and wiggling I guess.

Went through that with a Craftsman-Easco, but I had something to grab onto.

maybe try pressing it out in a vise. I would think that clip would give way long before the groove.

That could also result in damaging the groove/ratchet head. I suggest taking a piece of steel wire and driving it into the groove where the snap ring sits. Do this to push the ring around so that the broken end comes out, then piece by piece cut off the snap ring, eventually the whole ring will be out and you can disassemble. Wear safety glasses, those hardened snap rings can fly when they break/are cut.

Groove King has the right idea. Prebend your removal wire to approximate the diameter of the clip groove - might make it easier. That way, more of your force will be on pushing out the clip piece then conforming itself to the curved ratchet groove.

Worked on the ratchet again this afternoon and tried pushing several different wires through the groove, wiggling, some more pounding, etc. - no luck. I also tried cutting up a pop can to use the aluminum as a thin feeler/scraper but wasn't able to budge the clip. Last, I pressed a short section of wire (yellow arrow) into the groove and turned the drive with a wrench. Working it back and forth a couple times popped an end of the clip (green arrow) out the opening enough to grab it with some pliers and pull it the rest of the way out. After that the ratchet came apart with no problem. The wire came out of the groove with a small punch and a few hammer taps. Now to clean it and rebuild it.

I use two picks to get the clip out. Push it around with one and lift with the other
