hi
i am new to this forum . i have spent much time reading through earlier posts and i am very glad i found this site
i am redoing one bay in a 3 bay garage . as part of the project the old cement floor has to be removed
i drive porsches at a local track and i am slowly learning how to do some service on them . it seams to me that now would be a perfect time to make accomodations in the garage to accomplish this goal. there are som very elaborate in ground permanent lift solutions on this forum but i was thinking of just making a pit and putting into it a portable type car lift
does this make sense . is there a preferable lift to use . due to ceiling height it would have to be midrise
thank you and i apologise in advance for my naivite

Lift AND pit is an interesting combination, though it has its limitations. How low is your ceiling height exactly?

also web i was not looking to raise the car up very much i really just want midrise . the reason for the pit is that the cars are only 1 to 2 inches off the ground
thanks

Most low-rise or mid-rise scissors-type lifts would work. The nice thing about a 911 is that there isn't anything to obstruct in the middle of the car. You really only need access to the wheels, suspension and rear engine compartment. If you're pouring new concrete anyway, then it should be pretty straightforward to make a space for the lift that brings it down low enough so that you don't need to roll the car up on boards to get the clearance you need.

I went a little overboard with mine, tiling the top to match the rest of the floor. But I need that floorspace for the benches I have on that side of the garage. And I had gotten a deal on a second-hand lift table that actually has a flat top. It isn't useful for most cars, but it was perfect for my 911.

The lift cost me $455, and the additional cost of concrete, tile and tool rental only drove the price up to $670.

Here's the video.

Jack,

Do you ever use your lift as a work surface? It looks like it would make a great variable height work table or motorcycle lift in a pinch.

I do. This picture is almost impossible to make sense of, but it's a bookcase I made for my son's room, which I painted on the lift table. It was great to be able to raise and lower the whole thing without touching it. It made getting into the high and low corners very easy.
