Hey guys! I have a epoxy coat floor and decided to paint my engine bay in the garage. I wet the floor but didnt rinse it off after I was done. Now the overspray has adhered to the epoxy floor!

Question now is what can I do to clean it off without damaging the floor??!!!

On a good note I am very pleased on how the engine bay came out!! First time painting!

Paint thinner or mineral spirits should be fine. If it's a real catylized epoxy floor, then those solvents shouldn't affect it at all.

TIP: Johnson's floor wax on your floor before you paint will give you a coating for the paint to stick to instead of the floor and easily removed.

Ive tried mineral spirits but it doesnt even flinch to it!! I called but no one was in the office so hopefully tomorrow morning Ill have an answer from epoxy coat them selves. The only thing that seems to work is lacquer thinner but not sure if that will damage the coating!

standard solvents will not bother an epoxy floor (heck even 'regular' epoxies will handle 75% sulfuric acid!) - but if you have a clear coat on top of the epoxy (and almost certainly that clear coat would be low end ****) there could be problems with and sort of solvent and abrasive cleaning.

Maybe a auto detailers clay bar would work. Google it. I know they use it to remove overspray from car paint.

I'm thinking clay bar as well.

BTW, how do you like the epoxy-coat floor. Thinking of pulling the trigger on it....

Finish, thinner, and solvent compatibility is crucial but one thing must be considered Most paint overspray is easily removed with a light application of cutting compound, but epoxy paints have stronger bonding qualities that make removal more difficult.

Not sure if the OP got his floor clean, but I started this same clean up. I'm using brake fluid to break down the auto paint overspray, then laquer thinner to finish up.

My floor is 100% epoxy from rustoluem 6500 series and it seems to clean up very nice. In a couple of areas I left the thinner on a little to long, and it killed some of the shine. But I can live with that...

I have a ton of overspray from spraying my brake calipers... Huge pain in the *** that I'm never doing again in the garage... EVER...lol

Doing it outside.

Now I have a red mist all over the floor....

I've been using acetone and it's taking it off but I just wanted to make sure that it didn't screw up the floor. I have a poly top coat on it and from wha tI can tell it's not taking it off... I'm simply putting it on a rag and wiping it like one would wipe off finger nail polish... Not pouring it on the floor and letting it sit.. I tried many things and nothing was getting it off... Should I try mineral spirits since it's less harsh than acetone?

Thanks,
-Nigel

Excellent! Thanks Scotty, Cleaning up the garage tonight and taking pictures tomorrow.

I tried other things and it just wasn't pulling the epoxy paint that I sprayed my calipers with off... go figure. Acetone was pulling it off, I simply put it on a rag and started rubbing, I just didn't want it to harm the clear urethane coating on top...etc.

I still have some overspray that I can't get up. What would be the procedure for covering it with another layer of epoxy. The epoxy is still holding on tight to the concert, I just want to cover the overspray. Can I scuff the floor and put down another coat?

thanks,

If the epoxy is oil based (not a water born) product, using lacquer thinner shouldn't have a negative effect on it. Try it on an area that is out of sight. It is possible it could break the glaze and you would have a 'dull spot' where it is applied.
