Hello all - I'm a newbie here and have already gotten tons of input/information on a garage I am getting ready to build as a part of a new home. Before getting married, I made a deal with my future wife to have a 6 car garage and a urinal when we built a house. Its definitely time to cash in the garage but there's some disagreement on urinal placement. (I want it on the wall next to the pool table and my other half expects that it be in a bathroom - but I suppose that's a discussion for another forum.)
Right now, this is a greenfield garage opportunity, so any input or design considerations are very welcome.
We're currently working with our architect on a "massing" exercise for a city home in Chicago. Since the sites are relatively small in the city, we need to figure out where all the spaces/footprint will go before we do the design.
Looking at garages, it looks like we'll have an every-day garage to come and go in our daily drivers and a separate man cave garage for the dirty work. Of course, I am most concerned about the man cave garage.
So far, I expect to have enough room for 2-3 cars in the man cave, along with a two post lift and a stripper pole. (The stripper pole is still under debate and may not stick in the final design...)
I've told my architect to plan, at a minimum for a 16' X 25' interior space for the lift and working area. Does that sound about right? I expect this will be enough space for a wide lift and a minimum of space to move around a car/truck on the lift. Outside of that space, I'm guessing that another 22' in width will be needed to accommodate space for tooling around on two more cars. (Most likely, I expect to have a project car in one space and a donor in the other.)
Any other things I should consider in laying out the space for a garage? (I'll have other areas in the house where I can put workshop space, bathrooms, storage, etc.)
