Just trying to gater some ideas on a garage floor instead of a using foundation. I figured out I can get a complete garage kit from 84 lumber for $5,200 (20x24) From the prices I got the foundation will be around the same cost and I just dont have that kind of money. Is there any cheaper alternitive? Can stone, steel, wood, or asphalt be used? My biggest concern is using my floor jack on a soft material. Any suggestions/ideas/pictures will be helpfull.

First off what is your budget? Where do you live?

Considered a pole building? Concrete will be much much cheaper as well as the materials

depending on your location can you get away with putting up the shell only. get weather tight then do the floor next year or when you get the cash.for years i've been working outside on the dirt with plywood and 2x12 for support under a jack or a stand.a 2x12 on the ground flat will support most any jackstand.you can lay on plywood or cardboard.it may be what i wind up doing to get my garage.the slab i want is about 10k.good luck and don't give up

Don't cheapen out dude....I thought of doing the same...l my 24x24 concrete with 2 rows of blocks was $3200.00. My building package was $4000 at lowes.
It really depends where you are located.

Adding a general location to your profile will help you get your questions answered more accurately.

A 4" slab for the 20x24 will be just shy of 6 yards of concrete. I'm not sure where you're located but around here concrete is about $100/yd. If you are going stick built, you'll need a footer and a foundation to sit the walls on. If you go the cheaper route of a pole bldg, you'll get away with just slab floor which will save you cash.

Going pole vs stick and vice versa will have benefits for each side as they both have pros/cons.

You can always do the garage in stages just as others have done here like dynahoe has mentioned. Also the more work you can do yourself, the more you get for your money and the more you'll have in the end.

Sorry for nnot being clear. I live in New York which means cold winters! My budget is around 6k which will only get me the garage kit. They do have pole barn kits as well. They are the same price. Thank you for the replys!

Not to sound dumb, but your saying a 4" slab would cost me $600? If thats the case I would have no problem doing a pole building. Would just a slab work with NY cold weather?

I would check into doing a pole barn. My 40x40x10 kit was 9k and paying a contractor 4k for installed concrete.

You can erect the building and later pour the concrete when funds are available and I am sure there are pole barns in NY

Can you do a pole barn foundation and then a stick build atop that? Don't know if it will save ou anything. Everyone wants to do these projects on a dime but there is no such thing. Your dreams of the dime becomes $10.
