I thought my pointer had lost his mind when he went ballistic on my wife’s SUV. I know he has a good nose so I opened the hood to see what he was after.

I did not see the beast but the air cleaner is full of half eaten nuts. Then I looked in my truck, sure enough, deep into the engine on the intake manifold is a pile of opened and half eaten nuts!

Apparently, the squirrels are eating and sleeping on the engines at night and leaving in the morning. I think they may deposit the nuts in the morning so they have roasted nuts by the evening! These cars are driven daily so it is not like they sit for any amount of time.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of them?

I was thinking about spreading pepper all over under the hood, what do you guys think?

Bear repellant, spray the nuts, not their nuts, try not to get it on any of the rubber or plastic, spray it where they are going in and out. Don't get it on you or you will see why it works.

They started eating into my attic at the corner of the roof, so I blocked that area off and then they started eating all of the trim off my house... It looked like I really pi$$ed them off. The feeling was mutual! I was quite mad, so I grabbed my sons BB gun and pumped it up and shot the first one I saw... then the next, another, another... killed 7 in less then 30min. My wife was horrified. I told her that anything attacking my home or family, no matter how cute, was going to be met with extreme prejudiced.

It's been 2 years now and still no squirrel problem. You must either trap and relocate them, or eliminate the ones exhibiting undesirable behavior. I have had several friends try to humanly fix the problem, but after many failed attempts and lots of $ in home destruction, they had to eliminate their squirrel problem.

It seems once a squirrel has formed a destructive habit, you can't change it. Relocating them only gives them a new place to cause havoc.

I'm sure some of you will find the offensive... just click the little x in the top right of this window to send me feedback.

My dog started going nuts and jumping on the sliding glass door and barking like crazy, and he is a pretty mild tempered dog. The squirrels were all over the back yard, we have a fence and they run along the top from tree to tree. They will sit out there and I think they know how long the lesh is cause they will stay just out of the range and I'm pretty sure they are laughing at my dog when he runs full bore at them and the chain runs out and he snaps his neck. I got sick of them. I live in the city so any guns are illegal to fire. I'm not a hunter but I did some research and bought a crosman storm break barrel pellet gun with scope, it shoots at 1200 ft. per second which is almost as fast as a 22. I built a simple shelf and screwed it to the fence. It has a nail sticking up threw it and I stick dried corn cobs on it, yes I'm baiting the squirrels! Then took out the screen of a second story bedroom. Whenever doggy starts barking at the back door I run upstairs and open the window and grab the gun. I've gotten to be a really good shot and we no longer have a squirrel problem.

They follow a urine scent mark, that's why they come back, they bear spray pretty much eliminates their ability to smell their urine through it.

Sorry. I have wasted $$ on all the cure alls and they do NOT work. Only one thing really works and that is trap them then take them for a swim. Been trapping about 35 per summer trying to keep up with the neighbors feeding them. They can do a lot of damage.
Found this site to be the best and DEAD on with all its information. Also check out the message board, great support and stuff.

I've got a long thread on here about them, but I'll tell you what doesn't work:

moth balls
squirrel repellent
covering hole w/ sheet metal
filling hole w/ spray foam
d-con
bait blocks
mouse traps baited w/ PB

and probably a couple of others...

I have been able to trap one (no kill trap) - unfortunately it wasn't the right one. A few days ago I set up a trashcan / teeter-totter trap and don't have a squirrel yet, but did get a couple of field mice in it. I havne't seen him for a couple of months, but every morning there are a couplel of hulled out walnuts on the garage floor, so I know he's still in there.

I've also shot a number of them with a pellet gun, but the one I really need to get is a little red - and they don't like to go to ground. Since I'm in town, I can't shoot up in the trees - too many houses around.

I've been dealing with it for about 6 months now - probably the most frustrating thing I've ever had to deal with. I can normally find a solution to a problem, but I've tried everything I can think of with this squirrel. Good luck.

At my last house I had problems with chipmunks building a nest on the injectors of my diesel farm tractor. I used the large glue traps with great success. With the poison I was always afraid they would die inside a wall etc and stink. YMMV.

A rat trap secured to the ground near your vehicles and baited with peanut butter should work. It might be right at the size limit for a gray or red squirrel but for rats, flying squirrels and chipmunks it's instant death.
