That right here is a beast. And it keeps all the attachments, cord, the hose on board I believe.

If someone were to buy my Stainless Rigid, which is nice also, I would snap this vac up right away. Just don't feel like taking a loss on the Rigid, so will have to use it till it dies, which might not happen in my lifetime.

That is the one my painter has and it is pure power when it comes to sucking up debris.

This is the one I have from Lowes and isn't worth a ****

I bought a GUV by Hoover...very quiet and I hung it on a post (mid garage) and have a 30' hose...very convenient...did I mention quiet? :)

Those are beasts, they're actually a central vac motor in a can. If you can live without using it for wet stuff it'll pull birds out of the sky and it should last forever.

This looks pretty good. Any complaints? My hesitation is the smaller diameter hose and some reviews say emptying it out is a PITA. Thoughts.....?

I defiantly want a shop vac that can handle water. I have had to use it to pump up water in the basement before and some other places. Used the shop vac when I put in a new toilet to **** all the water out of it! I think it is just handy to have one that can handle water.
I am probably going to get a Ridgid. I will do some looking around this weekend.

I have a big craftsman that works like a champ. I have always been interested in the shopvac heads that fit on 55 gallon drums though.

My big craftsman 5.5 horse 20 gallon is a ***** to lug around. I live on a hill and is a pain to try and clean the car with it. For sucking up water, 2x4 scraps and construction mess, buy the biggest one you can afford. . I bought a Hoover GUV about 2 years about just for the cars. Its the best thing ever for that. It matches the Gladiator garage hammer tone finish too. THE GUV is good for light stuff, but is by no means a replacement for the big one.

That style works quite well. We have one at work although I think it is a Dayton, which will cost considerably more. The downside of that is though is one....emptying a 55 gallon drum of dust and dirt, or two....if you use it to **** up water, the drum is next to impossible to empty. The one we have at work is used to dry up the floors if they get flooded or to help dry them up if they get mopped. But if the barrel is even half full, it takes a towmotor with a barrel lift to get it out and emptied from where we are at.
If one had a woodworking shop or some such business like that, then the 55 gallon would be fine, but you would have to have a couple of barrels on hand. For the average homeowner, the 55 gallon style is just too big. then there is storing a huge drum in the garage, that will sit most of the time until it gets used on that one occasion.

I've had a Ridgid WD1450 14 gallon vac for 4 years. Price was around $100 when I bought it if I remember right. My main uses are for cleaning our vehicles and for dust collection from portable power tools. It has sucked up everything I've thrown at it with no problems - nails and screws included. I've got a Cleanstream filter that seems to perform better than Ridgid's standard paper elements.

I picked a up WD1450 this weekend!!!!
Thanks a ton for EVERYONE'S help!
I didn't have a chance yesterday to use it, but it is in my garage!

OK, see you bought something, so I'll just add this ...

if you can get it for that vac, about a +999 on getting the Gore CleanStream filter for the vac.

I bought a CleanStream filter YEARS ago. It works great, and lasts-and-lasts. Caked up with fine dust? Just rinse it off with water and then dry it by running the vac for a while. Can use it for wet or dry.

I think the only way I'll have to get a new filter is if something gets sucked up and then bounces around in the vac tank and punctures the filter (my vac has a 'shield/barrier' in between the hose inlet into the tank and the filter element, so no direct 'missile' path there ) or if the rubber 'seals' top-n-bottom eventually dry-rot and crack.

I will have to see if my has an 'shield/barrier' between the hose and the filter. That's a brilliant idea. I still haven't gotten it out of the box yet. And tonight is poker night at a buddy's house so I won't have much time until I am gone.

Or you can just put a bag inside. Thats what I do. Still get dust on the filter, but the bag is so much easier to clean out than picking up the whole thing. I have two filters always, so just wash one, and use the other.

Only thing is my planer owns the bags, but hey, you can't have it all.

Has anyone seen those vacs at HD or Lowes that attach to the top of a 5 gallon bucket? Any good luck with those?

Under $100??? MUST be an American! ;) I remember there was a thread about shop vacs a while back and they where on-sale for some retarded "Only in the USA" price.... but then just last week my Co-op had a 3.5 HP long-tank wall-mount unit with an 18' hose for $29.97!!! YES - in CANADA!!!! I'll post picks later.

My wife bought me a Shop Vac 5.5 hp 5 gallon as a garage wraming gift!. It works great and doesn't have castors which I don't like (tips over too easy). The hose threads onto the cannister so that it doesn't pull out like the ones I've had in the past. The cord is about 15' long which is nice also. YMMV.

The cleanstream filter site says their filter will not fit the new rigid quick lock system. Has anyone experienced this first hand? Are there any mods to make it work?

Should I go with the CM 17761 or the HD WD1450. They don't look the same so I'm questioning whether they are both Emerson and should just go by price.

The SS version both WD1956 and CM17778 are definitely the exact same. As the CM17778 is now $169 I'd go with that one. However, it is bigger than I'd like and was looking at the smaller CM and HD models?
