If you have a ceiling you could always put in a Whole House Fan. Leave the garage door up about 3-4 inches and vent it through the ceiling. It would also help keep the roof cool too.

Pictures would help everyone give you ideals. Some taken at daytime and nighttime.

I've often considered installing a whole house fan in my garage, leaving the back screen door open. However, wouldn't it be risky to use such a fan when working with volatile solvents, etc.? My concern is what would happen if the attic space was filled with volatile vapor.

When I re-roof the garage I will add ridge vents to help get the heat out

Using my DD to block when the project truck must be moved part way out to work on it seems to be the best plan going forward.

When I can work with project in garage, I will use both fans with door open 25%

At night, I only open the garage door about 2' and keep the back door open. It is just enough to get air to circulate. A fan helps as well

You must live near the coast. With the door fully open and a door open for cross flow it still ***** for me.

Move to the mountains.

Thats what I did.

Texas heat & humidity is awful. Get a $110 small ac unit as was mentioned. It will cool it some, but the main benefit is reducing the humidity in the garage space.

Plus as Chris mentioned, you don't get the bugs/mosquitos if you can keep the door closed.

you could make a rolling rack, kinda like a laundry room clothes hanger rack.

on that rack you could put some old craigslist vertical blinds.

they wouldn't need to be the size of your door opening, just roll it out and position it so it blocks the view into the garage at night.

something as small as 4x5 could do the trick

when done roll it inside against the wall.

the reason to use vertical blinds is that it will allow wind to pass thru

thinking further... go to big box store, get a section of wood fencing, put heavy duty air filled tires/wheels on (bicycle tires).

at the end of your driveway it will look like a gate, and you could put it other places on your property and everyone will just think its an accent section of fencing.

I think figuring out a way to keep the door closed is your best bet

Not only does it keep the criminals prying eyes out, but also the hero program sales people and the mormons too

I have a window fan in one of the two windows that pushes air out while drawing outside air in the other and that keeps the shop cool and mosquito free which is the bigger issue in my redneck of the woods

A window AC unit is like 100 bucks on craigslist.

Although a large whole house exhaust fan would probably work pretty good, I wouldn't worry about vapors collecting, your lights would ignite them first, not to mention most are of the gasses you would need to worry about are heavy.

Fred,
I didnt read all of the replies so i hope this isnt a repeat. One of my neighbors who works for a garage door company actually has a retracting screen for his garage door. I think it must roll back on each side and joins in the center. It is a dark screen material so you really cannot see inside.

Do a google search on "garage door screen"

I got a great deal on a Panasonic fan. Super quite and I have it wired to a timer switch so it keeps the garage cool. Or you could get a bigger attic fan and mount it the same way. Then just crack the door a foot to get airflow. make sure you vent the fan out of the attic or it will cause problems. 290 is perfect for moving air, but 500+ would be better if its hot.
No one has talked about insulation. Do it! Even just the door and roof will make a huge difference. Way more than any fan.

A window AC unit of appropriate size can be pretty darn cheap, and can be installed in a wall, not only a window.

Yup!

I really like all the ideas for moving air and helping to keep the garage from being so stifling.

And I will be using a couple of these ideas, but modified a bit.

A large portion of the time I will be working with the project 1/2 in & 1/2 out so I will be using bigger fans.
