Ekegelmann's thread with a similar title peaked my curiosity regarding brace and bits sets I remember seeing my dad use back in the 1950s. I still use them occasionally when I'm boring a deep hole.

The Irwin bit set ranges from 1/4 to 15/16 inches. The larger brace is a Stanley No. 923 - 10 IN -Y. The smaller brace is a Victor No. 966 - 8 IN.

Any ideas how old these tools might be?

I have this brace I inherited from my father and probably my grandfather. The chuck is stamped " Stanley Rule and Level Co. Conn."

The upper arm of the brace is stamped Stanley on one side and No 921 8" on the other side. It is stamped with patent dates in 1902, 1904 and 1906.

The enclosed ratchet mechanism appears to be unusual as in the pictures on Google out of 100+ there were only three pictures of this style.

I would think 1950 s or 1960 s. The bit set if its in good shape would probably sell for about $100 on eBay and the braces both look like they are in good shape. For the bits, you want the lead screw to be sharp and very pointy and the cutters on the sides should be sharp too. I would be delighted to use them for their intended purpose if I were you.

They don't go for much on ebay. A full set of bits in nice shape will go for a little bit of money.

Put some oil on them, and enjoy using them. They are pretty handy. You can also put screwdriver bits in most of them. They are good for getting out old screws.
