Surprised that it doesn't have any writing on it?? It sort of looks like the RI my dad has, but I'm not sure. How big is it? Looks like a girthy SOB from the pics (crushed water bottle right behind being my gauge).

At first glance it looks like a Prentiss but the "eyebrow" is too rounded at the corners and the operating handle nut doesn't taper correctly.

My guess is a large Athol

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is there a huge weld repair blob on the dynamic jaw tower, right behind the jaw insert?

Here's my Prentiss #57. They look similar but the operating nut is different. It could be a replacement but Prentiss vises were usually well marked

Outlawms - there is only one way to get an answer.....buy the vise...take some before photos......bust your knuckles cleaning it up.....take some after photos....then we can determine who made it.

Yeah it has such a generic shape that all the vises had of the era... The only giveaway that it's ones of the better ones is the beefier slide support. If that crushed water bottle next to it is any indication of side, I'm guessing around 125-150 lbs?

Don't you just love that? I ended up talking to a guy at the estate sale i went to this past friday since he was watching me unbolt a Morgan No.40 from the work bench. He said he had quite a few american made vises at his house and offered me a chance to look at them.

I jumped at the offer and gave him my number. My hands were full and very dirty but i told him i would get his number too, i just wanted to wipe my hands down before retrieving my phone from my pocket. He said not to worry and he would call me sometime that weekend.

I'm still waiting for the call.........:headshake
