Found this big heavy vise in a barn. 10" high, jaws 6" wide, opens about 6". Only writing is the big "6" on the moving jaw and a big stylized "C" on the fixed jaw. What is this? I hope the "C" doesn't stand for China! There is no other marking. Any value?

Hi, rule of thumb. If its not stamped into the vise "Made in the U.S.A" anywhere, then its not made here. Vintage vises will have city & state also, but all will have those important 4 words..

Yup.

And autopts knows his vises. This guy has bought and sold hundreds.

My tell tale sign is the leadscrew. Yours is too small for the size of the vise. That screams cheap import to me.

I just noticed my stepdads vise has similar markings this weekend, a number, and a letter, big like that. I know it is at least 25 years old. I'll shoot him an email and ask about it.

Yours looks very similar to mine, except I don't have the big C on the side, and no swivel base. I've had mine for almost 9 years and abused the hell out of it. It's been a great vise! I wish I knew more about it. I suspect import as well.

Did you ever find out who made this one? I have that one too... It's tough, got it cheap and it works good... I am pretty sure it "offshore", but it DOESN'T feeel like it (heavy)... Let me know, thanks!
