Hi! I'm pretty new to the forum. I hope this is the right place and that I'm not starting with a faux pas. I read the sticky and honestly don't know where else to start. I can't find a brand or any other kind of helpful marking. I'm hoping to learn more without completely disassembling it.

All I've got is what I assume is a date mark: "09.77"

Here are some pics. Thanks!

It looks to me like it was a combination buffer and grinder, but someone sawed off the tool rest for the grinder. Does it power up?

I have no idea! I don't have three phase at home and I haven't yet brought it into work to test. In person it looks like it broke off and somebody made the best of it by grinding the rough edges down.

I bought it for the pedestal but I'd like to keep the actual buffer/grinder with it if I can manage to power it at home. An EE I know recommended a single phase to three phase VFD. I don't even know the HP rating to size one though...and I don't have 220V in my shop either >.< (yet)

OK I think I've found something on Vintage Machinery. The VDETCO casting is a possible match for Van Dorn Electric Tool Company

The pedestal is a near-perfect match.

I don't see anything relevant on VM but now that I know the make I'll poke around some more. Here's a catalog that's close but no cigar.

I'd try running it with a 115 volt input 1 HP VFD, if the buffer draws too much current for it, can always use the VFD on a drill press down the road.
