Help identify the model of a "Snap On" toolbox... *Post #9 has answer*

So I found a deal that I could not pass up and picked up this "Snap On" toolbox. Both the rolling chest and the top section for the low low price of "come get it."

Problem is, I cannot find any plates or markings to identify this as a Snap On other than the two badges on the front.

Anyone know where this information might be or what model these are? Looking to restore them in a bit and will be looking for replacement parts as they are needed.

Model numbers are usually on the top right corner on the rear of the boxes.

I think they are canadian / made for the canadian market. OP where are you from? Great score on the boxes, can't beat the price

Let me do some digging and see if I can find you a model number.

I am in Tennessee and picked these up from a friends neighbor. From what I am told he picked them up off his grandfather or father... No telling where they came from before that.

I will check out the back top right and see if there is something there.

Those are definitely not Snap On, looks like some knock-off. Send it to me and I will properly dispose of it

BTW, look on the left side of the top box for a model and year stamp.

blurred - I believe you have a Snap-on KR-570 Chest and Cabinet Combination. I have a similar KC-532 top chest and a KR-570 roller cabinet combination that I plan to restore. I bought the top chest used in 1969. I believe it was made in 1965 or 1966. It says MADE IN CANADA KC-532 on the back. I'm not sure about the roller cabinet as the previous owner had a "thick" paint job done on it which filled in the model numbers.

I really like this model line, especially the "toilet seat" top which is either up or down - no folding front panel.

Alright, had the time to do some cleaning in the garage and I found the stamped model numbers under some heavy dirt and grease.

KR-558 on the bottom toolbox and KR-533 for the top. Both built in 1969.

Already worked some things to get the top to close right and sit correctly when open. Just need to clean up one of the sliders and these will be good to use.

However, I want to powdercoat everything just to clean them up.


Opinions would be great, could obviously do the red, but also thinking a satin black.

Ah 1969, one of the years Collecting snap on doesn't have. Plus they are not listed in the tool storage section area either. Must have been a short lived design. What are the dimensions on those boxes? Specifically the top box?

I personally think they look good as is. Unless the inside or back is rusty I would just clean, line and use. Something about that old patina really adds class. But that is just me. If I was to repaint I would pick a real vibrant color. I have seen a few in powered blue that I will some day do to one of my boxes. Then again, it seems there is a unwritten rule that old S.O. boxes must be red or faded into orange. I really like this one that someone repainted. I personally don't like black for a tool box as it can hide tiny parts and grease.

Mowhawk, so did you get both of those boxes, the snap on and matco? I remember you posting about them, but forget the outcome.

The problem with my box is that it didn't have enough drawers for all of the tools I needed to fix Austin Healeys!

You are right about "red or faded into orange". That would be my preference for mine but it's too late. I purchased mine off of a Snap-on truck. The dealer said it was about 3 or 4 years old (therefore 1965 or 1966) and it had already been painted a noticably darker shade of red. There are traces of red/orange though. The matt black drawers are original (to mine anyway).

You may already know that Snap-on made a Golden Anniversary model of that box ... in gold of course.

Hey zkling, yep, picked them both up. SO has some surface rust on bottom drawers, so it will get a full redo-keeping it. but the Matco is really clean. couple rub scratches here and there, but, to me at least, a very clean box. Only problem is, I am not totally in love with it...so I may actually sell/trade it. And since I've been picking up 34/40"+ wide boxes, the 26"ers aren't as special to me anymore. Unless they are rare-ish. I think the only 26" boxes I really will continue to pick up are old clean SOs, or the 1960s C-man grey with red drawers- I really like those for some reason...oh what the hell, I like old RemLines too.

Well, I do like that color. Might have to change it up a bit and go for an old-school set/color scheme for my next garage, toolboxes included.

As for the size, the bottom one is approximately 32" tall and 26.5" wide. The top box, roughly 13" tall and 26.5" wide. That is just a quick outside edge to outside edge measurement...
