Hi all,

picked this up off local Craigs list. Seller was clearing out his fathers old tools who had recently passed. Thought this was an old UK drill Press.

Could not find a name on it. Would love to know more about it.

Thanks all.

Ken J

That is a very strange DP for sure. But I like it! I also like the Angle vise!

Is the motor a variable speed control?

Does the Quill assy crank up and down, or do you use set screws?

There is a machine tools ID site that I will try to round up (in the UK I believe but lists a lot of US iron as well), and that is probably your best shot...

It is a converted over head belt drive drill press. My guess is that it is form 1880 - 1920
I have had one in the past like that but I never did find out who made it. That was before the internet.
Type in over head drillpress on Google and click photos. You might find another one fast and get a lead.

Any chance it is a mill drill and not a drill press?

Mind saying what you paid for it?
I dream of finds like that...

Strange one. I have a Buffalo 14 (floor model) like Larry, and while same style, not a match. First thought was an Avey, but that doesn't seem to match either, that curved oblong cut out in the side of the column is pretty distinctive. Might post it over on OWWM, in the old metal working machine forum.
Good luck, Jim

It's not a mill; a mill or even a drill/mill has an X/Y table.

Ah, yes, you are correct. My bad.

Thanks all,

looks like based on the reply pic and a little research it most likely is an Avery.

Will have to do more searching.

The motor is not the origional and it has 2 speeds based on pully setup. Hopefully I can find some info on origional design.

Or maybe could look into a DC motor on top in order to have infinite speed control. Not done this before so input would be appreciated.

Cost?? Paid 400 but also came with 2 jacobs chucks, a cast iron setup plate that supposedly was mic'ed and is very flat. He was firm on the price as he had several callers asking about it, but as I was first to ask I had first crack. And based on the operation and Vintage of the machine im happy with the price.

Then from there i was able to buy 3 different 6qt baskets of old hand files, taps, dies and reamers and new (NIB) and open roller bearing of different sizes and brands.

Thanks all, more pics to follow as it goes.

Cheers,
Ken J

Here is a link to my DP where I replaced the motor with a treadmill motor and its modified speed control. Most treadmill motors run from 1-1/2 to 2 HP,and are no heavier than a 1/2 or 3/4 HP induction motor.
