Help identifying a vise

I'm going to check this out on craigslist later today. The guy doesn't know anything about it and says "the name plate was gone when I got it". He did say it has a "T" and "V" stamped on it, but doesn't have any better pics. Any ideas on who make it or an estimate on what it's worth? I'm not looking to buy and flip, just don't want to pay too much for it.

TIA

Most examples of that type of vise, are manufactured in Asia, and not always very well. The older examples are supposedly heavier in construction, but the casting is still poor. Harbor Freight currently sells 2 models of it. Different model numbers, but similar vises. The price new is $70 to $80.

The original examples of that vise design were USA made. If the vise says Atlas or Fulton or Nutyp it may be original to the 1920s when the design was USA made.

Some people find that type of vise incredibly usefull. The best current example is sold by Yost Vise, model 750-DI. The DI stands for ductile iron. Supposedly the vise is made heavier as well. The Yosts have a street price just over $200.

keep looking. stand is 100 times more sturdy than that vise. the lower jaws already look out of align and some funny lines on the back look like welds. most guys that own these love them because of the turning jaws but they are always trying to fix them.

by an old US on for a little more and you will be happier. where are you located because I've seen this vise on Craigs and I might have something for you. Post or PM me.

good luck in your search

Thanks for the info:). The stand was half the reason I was interested so I may still take a look. I already have a 6" united and a 3.5" US made one, can't recall the brand. I'm definitely trying to avoid the import junk vises. My 3.5" has been in the family for decades and is what I grew up using. I used a HF vise for the first time a few years back and couldn't believe how bad it was.

You only really have two options. Either wait it out locally for something that might not show up (and you better be QUICK) or join the herd and bid on eBay. However you will pay a pretty heavy premium for it. Just look at past sold auctions to determine going prices, sometimes they get out of control.

My dad is retired and probably spends too much time doing that. Mostly for smaller stuff, he's built up quite a collection of early 20th century wood planes:lol:.

I'm not necessarily in the market right now, just happened to be leaving town today and browsing the craigslists along the way to where I'm going.

New to this site ,,was hoping to get some info on this vise. Tilts or pivots all the way down to 90degrees, and swivels.
Any information would be appreciated.
