Hey i was wondering if the great minds of Garage Journal can give me a schooling on this old vice/anvil I have!

From the research i've done it seems like its an antique blacksmith vice/anvil combo.. and thats about all i found out haha. The markings on the side are really hard to read so I couldnt find out anymore info on it..

Thanks!

It's a drill, too. Sears sold them.

It's a vise/anvil for sure, but not something that any self-respecting blacksmith would own or use. These were made of cast iron and don't hold up to the heavy pounding needed for blacksmithing. These were more of a residential/light duty tool.

Dang, I spit my water on that one. Right up there with the shop smith Eh?

I passed one of those up this past summer. A buddy of mine had it out at the flea market. I definitely did not have a use for it. It was 50 bucks and pretty rough looking. It did have the pins attached to it though, but no drill attachment and probably missing other stuff. Cool to see the advertisement. Wow, $4.10? What year is that ad from?

it was made 4 the mass's and advertised in the sears catalog back in the 1st 25 years of the last century. mostly bought by farmers, not necessary professionals in metal working.

It's an interesting piece. I would give it the works & make it look like new.

The fact that it's as old as it is & has held up well over the years warrants a full restow.

Yeah, your drill handle and that plate are missing, but it looks like the chuck at least is still there. Most of these that I've seen pictures of are missing the same pieces. Probably got thrown out when people got real drills and just started using these exclusively as vises.

Some of the fancier versions of these combo tools had a grinder adapter as well that went into the drill press connector. So it was an anvil, vise, drill press and grinder. I've never seen one with all the parts.
