Help Identifying Compressor!

Hey guys! I am new to the forum. I have lurked here as a guest for quite sometime now. Never really felt I have anything good to contribute until now. Recently purchased a house and am in the process of buying tools and setting up my home garage. Got the “ok” from the wife to pursue putting up a steel building with a lift in it, but that will be later this year. Right now the question I have is about this compressor. I purchased it from a private seller on craigslist. I feel I got it for a good price, but am quite unsure everything about it. I know the generals, 5HP 80 Gallon 230V. He informed me to hook it up using a minimum 8 gauge wire for a 50 ft run of wire or less. This puts it at I believe a 50 amp breaker? I ran it in my father in laws shop today, which he has 230 single phase and also a lot of 3 phase hook-ups for all the welders. I am wondering if any of you compressor guru's have any experience with this compressor or its history? FYI he was asking $1000.00 and I got it for $700.00. By trade he sets-up compressed air systems, sells new/used, and offered a warranty on this unit. Thanks for the help guys!

Well they guy I bought it from advertised it as a Gardner Denver, has Siemens Control Units, and has a Schrader Air Sticker on it... I am super confused. But for $700.00, all brand new electronics, and this clean is it a bad deal?

It can be both a Gardner Denver as well as a Champion, since Gardner Denver owns Champion. When G/D bought Champion they dropped most of their A series compressors, they were pricing themselves out of a market. Then there is a big global investment company that owns G/D. Here is the fun part, get a spray booth and a sticker and it is an ABC compressor. $700 isn't bad for a used compressor, it's a great price for a new, but if it is new, why is it sitting on a 15 year old tank. Is this unit reconditioned?
Yes, confusing!

Well this is the "history" I got from the seller. He sells new/used compressors and installs industrial air supply systems. He got this compressor in on trade when they were upgrading to I believe a screw-type compressor. He listed it as a GD compressor, cleaned it all up, sanded/blasted parts, and offered a warranty on it. I was just wondering if it could be distinguished between a Champion or a GD. The asking price was a $1000.00 and with how clean everything is I do not feel bad paying $700.00. Now I just need to figure out how to wire it into my garage. He told me to go with 8AWG wire up to 50 feet from the source (IE panel). I ran it briefly in my father-in-laws shop on a 30 AMP breaker with a 8AWG cord he had. So if anyone can give me some help there, it would be appreciated!

The only way you might be able to distinguish it from one or the other is the color under the current paint, but regardless it is the same machine, Champion R15. The $700 is what I get for a refurb. 5 Hp. When I get them, they usually don't stay around long.

Well that makes me feel a lot better. Considering all the electrical is new on the compressor and everything works I can not complain. Any idea on breaker size and wire requirements to run to my attached garage?

A Champion RV15A, a lower model on the totem pole. This unit has finger (reed) valves instead of concentric ring valves, and no centrifugal unloader.

Thanks so much. I've got the same starter and was pretty sure how to wire it up but those pictures confirm it.

The starter has a definite purpose, DP contactor, if there are any issues w/ it in the future just toss it & buy another DP contactor as they are not repairable.
