the one end has a ****** with a thread inside of it, like it would screw into something.

I think it may be the cutoff end of a buggy singletree.

Similar function to these originally

A ring may have screwed into the ******.

That handle looks to have been shortened. Back in the old days they had those gas lights up high they would need to light with a pole. Indoors and outdoors. I would assume that threaded hole was for something that held a flame source.
