Hey, doing some cleaning with my parents today and came across what looks to be a Millers Falls hand drill. I'm not sure exactly which one it is though. I thought it might be a #2

It works pretty well but I can't get the chuck to grab anything too tightly.

I've been checking out this massive guide on them though:

Here are a couple pics:

The cap has some storage for some drill bits and there were actually a couple in it. It's hard to see but there is an (M) marking on them

Any ideas on the model number?

Ahh awesome, I tried looking around for some markings originally but didn't see anything.

Checked out the crank handle and looks like its a No 5

Looks like a 5A to me with the wide rim on the drive gear. Those spiral bits probably aren't original as I believe straight fluted bits would have come with it, same as the push drills.

Cool biz!

Take that sweetie apart, thoroughly clean, and restore it. A little paint in the right places and some sanding and varnish for the handle and you'll be set for life.

I'm leaning towards it being a #5 Type 9: http://www.georgesbasement.com/mfno135typestudy/No5Type9.htm

I'd like to clean it up. It looks like it's missing the big handle on the backside and the chuck seems to have some issues. I couldn't get it tight on anything and when loosening the chuck the jaws didn't slide back (I had to push them back)

Could just be old grease/gunk sticking things up. A good soak should loosen it up. Maybe one or more of the springs are broke. Possible - it looks old.
