I'm thinking for valve springs, but I'm probably a mile off on that.

Who's garage and any more pics of the goodies in there?

My grandfather ran a garage/gas station out of the building in the 30's and 40's. My dad took ownership not too long ago, so we have started going through it. Lots of little goodies, and lots of stuff that we have no idea of what it was/is.

Looks like a drill press. Mount a hand drill in the fixture, and you've got yourself a make shift drill press.

Looking at it, it doesn't have a hole in the middle for the drill bit to go through the table, so maybe not necessarily intended for drilling.

considering that a valve grinding machine appears to be next to it, it is probably related to some kind of head work. The round area could have been used to press down a valve spring retainer on overhead valves. It does look very much like a mount your own drill press however. You might look for a drill that doubled as a guide reamer or spun the stones that ground the seats to see if it locks into that ring.

With the 3 screws into the holder and the slots one the table, it is definitely for a drill motor. I had one similar. Not the best of tools, but don't get rid of it. There are a lot of things you can do with something like that.

Recently I showed someone how to make a drum sander out of a small drill press. You could even put an air chisel in that with a metal planishing attachment and start forming parts. Put a wood buck or a lead bag under and go at it to rough form.

Give it to me!

could it have had detachable press heads that went in it? would be kinda cool to set it up for that if its strong enough as far as leverage. you going to keep it or sell it?

We really have no use for it, so it will more than likely get sold.

Hey, I'm a couple hours away. Feel free to PM if you get a list of sale items, I'd love to have a look. Always interested in old equipment.

And that sedan looks cherry too!

Does the AC can have an air chuck on it? Most likely this is a spark plug sandblaster but its hard to see from the picture.

Agree with others that the press is for a hand drill.

Not sure if it does or not...I will have to check it out.
BTW, the garage is about 3 hours north of me. We plan on going through the whole garage this spring, when it warms up a bit. There is a lot of junk that needs to be thrown out before we get to the good stuff.

I say don't throw anything out--one man's junk is another man's treasure.

I am pretty close too. Would love to look at anything you may want to sell.

I am not sure that that is a valve machine next to it. It looks like it may be a machine that shops used to reline brake shoes. If that is the case, then the press looking tool may be the riveter to rivet the new brake lining on the used shoes. The circle looking base may have been used for an assortment of adaptors. Back in the early days, shops actually relined shoes in house. Removed the lining from the shoe, ground and molded the new lining to fit the shoe, and riveted the new lining to the shoe.

The garage is just outside of Muncie, IN. So ~4 hours from Chicago?
It will be another 4-5 weeks at least until we get a chance to go through everything, but I will let you know.

Thanks

...Not the best of tools, but don't get rid of it. ...

My 3 generation Farmer-family down the road a ways have a similar DP set up that they have been using for years (50+). I need to get a pic up of it. It is awsome, that they have used this thing for everything they do.

It has a 1" (I think) hand drill mounted. This thing is a monster. If you tried to hand drill and the bit locked, it would break your wrists and shins.

I have seen them drill 1 1/4" inch holes in 1 1/2 inch plate that look like it came from a machine shop. They are not samll time mom and pop farmers and maintain some very big expensive equipment.

Goes to show, its not the dog in the fight its the fight in the dog, tool wise that is.

Dave.

It's definitely a drill press for hand drills. I gotta go check pa's basement. He has one similar with a old THOR.

That Buick is absolutely awesome.
Is it a 1953 Buick Special?

No relatives of mine ever leave a cool place like that behind to sort through.

x2 on selling them here. Can't tease us like that and then take them away. Nice stuff for car guys and petroliana collectors.
