You're better off going industrial supply for stuff like that if you can't get it locally. Grainger, MSC, McMaster, etc.

I just ordered some 2x2x1/8" aluminum angle from Amazon, but they only go to 6ft. It was cheap though, $22.

Go to an actual steel supply place or steel fab shop.
All those other places are ridiculous expensive. I went to a local metal supermarket type place & got ripped $35 bucks for a couple feet of square tube. I'll never go back. (it was convenient though, only reason I went there)
Edit: I think it was speedmetals that was way overpriced here.

You dont have any sort of Metal Supply or Fabrication shops around you ? The box stores are the worst places to buy metal .. unless its small pieces needed in a hurry or on a weekend.

ask around locally, like maybe at a welding supply shop, small welding outfit, etc...someone local will supply metal to small and medium size businesses, was a mill supply co. in one town where I lived, a industrial hardware supplier in another, etc...as was said big box hardware stores have poor selection and very high prices for steel

If you have a local 4x4 forum, post a thread asking where they buy tube. The cheapest place will be a business that ONLY sells metal. Anywhere else will probably charge you around 2x to 2.5x more per pound.

I used to manage an industrial supply branch similar to Grainger. Still bought my steel from the local steel supply (PDM).

I have a steel yard local to me that sells new steel at $1.10 a pound and $0.70 a pound used. They have a 2' minimum, most steel yards require you to buy a 20' stick minimum. If you give your location, I am sure someone will know of a yard near you. As has been said, go w/ a steel yard, it will be much cheaper.

I like going to my local welding/fabrication shop to get my metal. Prices have probably gone up a little, but last August I purchased for a total of $81 with tax:

16'- 1.5”x1.5”x.188 wall tubing
20"x24" x 1/4" steel plate
10'- 2"x3" .125 wall (1/8", 11 gauge)

Last November for $42:

13' 10" - 2"x3" .125 wall (1/8", 11 gauge)

I've done well buying from local welding/fabrication shops. Usually my needs aren't critical and I can use cutoffs that they will part with cheap.
When I need something specific, I usually go to Shapiro Metals. That's local to me too,(St. Louis) but they do a huge online business if you're not in a big hurry. They also have cutoffs, plus a dizzying array of oddball junk.

These places you mention are where one trys, again trys to buy metal stock at 8:00pm on a Sunday. You need to find a metal supplier rather than a house repair store.

Metal Supplier always gets you the best discount - specially if you buying full sticks (20'-22' depending on item) Some even have reasonable delivery.
Next would be local welder/fabricator shop. They are usually suppliers but with a minimal markup and also will do cutting (at a cost). Even sheet shock.
Only go to HD, Lowes, Tractor Supply, ....etc, if you looking for one piece 36" or smaller. They are grossly over priced.

TSC may have it, but probably not in 8' lengths. Look in your yellow pages under Fabrication, and see if you have any Fab places around, or welding places around. I'm sure you have something within at least an hours drive.

Would an old bed frame work? You could probably buy a new bed frame for less than the retail price you would pay on the raw material.

If the op would put location on his avatar profile it would be easier for someone to help him, we have no way of telling where he is. :rocker:

Drilling holes is a real PITA on those bed frames! I don't recall any issues cutting as long as I had a good/new blade.

Cutting it is no problem w/ an abrasive metal cutoff saw either and the bedframe steel I've used so far has been easy to weld...would not use it for anything critical but works well enough for simple projects, recently made a BBQ stand from the stuff.

As has been said, find a local metal supply. A 20 foot stick of 2x2 1/8" angle is $20.96 at my supplier.

Gentlmen, my apologies if my original post was not clear, but I actually had no idea on who or what to look for locally...

This thread gave me the knowledge I needed, i.e. metal suppliers, fabrication, welders... again I had no idea on what to even search..

but yall did me one better, EVEN gave me links!!

Matter of fact.. just got my quote!

Hot Rolled Angle 2.000 x 2.000 x .125 96" Unit Price $14
Total: $29.43($1.43taxes)

I'm good right? This is exactly what I was asking for, correctumundo?

Thanks Feller's!
