The description of the pin and socket are D1,6/L=11,7

Which open barrel pliers do you guys recommend? Most sets I find use AWG, what AWG do the above pins fall into?

Are there open barrel crimpers that use the metric sizes?

Does it really matter?

You might find this helpful, the forum for those installing these EFI, kits, this thread discusses the connectors and crimping methods. The pictures should look familiar.

Yes, it matters a lot to get the right crimper. Most crimpers sized in AWG are meant to crimp StaKon or similar connections. They're inappropriate for what you have.

I would find the manufacturer of the pin and source the tool he recommends.
Pins are designed to work with a specific diameter of wire.

The molex pliers would probably work Jamco has them cheaper.
If I could not find needed information I would test a few different crimpers with different gauge wire to see if I could get a good crimp. I would rather trash a few pins on the bench than install poorly crimped pins in a application.

Open barrel crimp pins are available for different AWG sizes and different insulation sizes, There are very expensive industrial grade hand crimpers with replaceable dies that are set up for one size wire and one size insulation, that do the crimp in one squeeze and there are consumer grade crimpers with a range of sizes on the jaws that crimp the wire on the right size pin and then do the insulation in the notch that works. Industrially they are done in a machine, not a hand crimper. There is no way to tell from your picture what size it is.

Where did you get the pins? Check the specs. What size do you need? It is if you are showing a picture of a bolt and asking what size nut you need. They all look alike in a picture.

Lots of websites accidentally put commas instead of decimal points, so I assumed that meant the OP needed a crimper with 1.6mm diameter sized dies and the terminal ends as a whole are 11.7mm long (a little less than 1/2"). Quite small, but all three of the crimpers I linked him to have 1.6mm dies on them.

That's not an accident. That's the standard European notation.

www.waytekwire.com Part #560 for the frame ($44.83) and # 567 ($47.14) for the die to crimp that size terminal. This die (one of many that will fit this frame) has three separate crimp stations. It will crimp 22-10 ga or for you metric people, 0.5 to 1.5mm, 1.5 to 2.5, and 4 to 6mm terminals.

This tool and die set is actually made in Switzerland and is top quality for a great price from Waytek.

The pins and sockets are OEM BMW:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho..._1986_E30_BMW_325i&diagId=61_1029#61131371605

Part numbers 61131371605 and 61131371607

Unfortunately the parts dept at the dealership is not in a position to recommend a crimper.

Rlitman is correct in that using a comma instead of a period is standard european notation.

Thanks for the recommendation Jermey V, I am liking the engineer PA-09/PA-20 crimpers. They look to be well made and reasonably priced.

The OP knows what size he needs and he stated it in the original post. He mentioned needing metric crimpers and he also gave the following information.

Oops!! Sorry I missed that.

I use this from Mac

TCT1028.jpg

The $350 Chrysler/Mercedes crimper is identical to that one. But $50 I think from Mac.

Not as good as a dedicated crimper with all the proper dies but if you are careful it gets the job done.
