Help I've caught a terrible illness (buying old tools)

So the other week I found a guy selling tools. I went to look and I did something I have never done before. I bought a bin of sockets and a milk crate full of wrenches. It was $20 for these and a 2.25 ton floor jack and a milk crate full of bolts. Anyway it is mostly taiwan, Japan, China labeled but there are some named brands. Snap-on, good bit of Craftsman, bernsomatic (didn't know they made hand tools) , and even a bonney wrench (the pics). It is really cool and I will definitely be doing it again.

First question...how do you know what to keep? What do you do with what you don't?

So you send the China stuff to your local habitat for humanity store as a donation and keep the brand stuff craftsman etc.

Oh good idea on the habitat for humanity store...hadn't thought of that. Do any of you guys try to resell some to support the addiction. Not trying to make money...just maybe not loose as much?

I usually use the stuff that is the harder sell after sorting out the few gems.

Then slowly resell even the Chinese stuff to help feed the addiction. But then I have a good market here for the low priced usable import.

Matthew suggested donating to Habitat for Humanity. You may also consider donating to a local school that has an auto shop or similar program. There may be a kid that wants to learn, but whose family can't afford tools.

Don't think of it as an illness, just consider that you are being generous and adopting poor underprivileged tools, to give them a good home. In time you'll become more and more generous.

I work at a school with a stage tech program.
Usually just donate the stuff i don't want or can't use to the scene shop.

It is a disease, and my sad duty to inform you there is no known cure; and I'm afraid that it's terminal. As mentioned by my colleague above, it has been known to metastasize into accumulating tool boxes as well.

What do you recommend for cleanup. I used a wire cup brush on my angle grinder on the wrench above and it worked nicely. Is this my best bet or are there better things. Im not looking for polish just removing rust and making things usable again. Am I correct that not much can be done for a rusty socket since they are chromed?
