help, lights to install above garage door

First of all I just want to say hi, I have been a creeper on this forum ever since a buddy of mine told me about this forum. I have been getting ideas from here ever since.

I have been taking my old 2 car garage and and fixing it up to be functional and nice looking (thanks to all of you) and the question I have is with my garage door open it doesn't give a lot of room above for lighting so with door shut its a dark spot in the garage what would you recommend?

What is "not a lot of room" in inches? I have fluorescent surface mounted fixtures in my garage and I don't think they are more than 3" deep...

As shooting4life said, can lights would be the smallest profile you can get...

I installed a couple of these in the basement garage at my old place. Worked great for the 7 years I was there. They sit as flush as a can light and give many more lumens, but are more dollars.

You could do what I did and lower your rafter ties and put your lights on the bottom of them and then go to open your doors afterwards and make yourself laugh at your own lack of foresight. That was a fun one.

I just keep the lights above my door on a separate switch and deal with the "darker" area. If I need that area to be bright, I shut the door. Then again, will all the other light I have in the garage, it still is not very "dark" in that area. I have 6, 4' (2 bulb) fixtures in a 20x20, 2 of which are above the door.

You are always going to have lighting issues when your door is up if you have ceiling mounted lights...the door will always be covering the lights. The best solution is to use wall mounted lights. You may want to look at the Progress P5691:
