I would appreciate any help in locating the and even a source for a specialty fastener. The fastener is a like T-nut that with external and as well as internal threads. They would be used as an alternative to a pop rivet threaded insert. To use one you drill a hole in sheet metal, insert the T-nut and then put a hex nut on the external thread. The internal threads are then used to bolt on the second piece of material in place. I found one in a scrap yard that was used in the aluminum frame for an RV tarp.

With any luck I have attached pictures of the one fastener that I have. Number 1 shows it completely disassembled; Number 2 is assembled with a nut on the exterior thread and a cap screw screwed into the internal thread.

Any help in locating the name or source of these would be greatly appreciated.

that almost looks and acts like a bulkhead to me

http://www.mcmaster.com/#bulkheads/=o8yce1

although most bulkheads are for plumbing applications, not structural. As such they are usually made of plastic type materials. Mcmaster does have some stainless ones but they start at $80 each and go up to over $300

Sounds like it could be some sort of standoff. Although it could be a specialized fastener just for the company that made the tarp & frame.

Could be a bulkhead connector, but those are typically larger and the ID would be threaded for pipe.

It looks like a type of threaded insert, but with a backer. Most threaded insert install from the front, into a blind hole, or at least into something where there is no rear access, but that clearly installs from the rear.

You can make a similar one if you have a drill press and a tap.

Get a piece of "all thread", the correct OD, cut it to length and drill and tap a hole through it. Put a nut on the front and back. I would add a drop of thread locker to the back nut.

That looks like a bolt that was modified for a special use. How many do you need? real simple job for a lathe.

Thanks for all the responses. I do not really need any of these fasteners at the moment. As suggested I have once in the past modified a T-nut to do the same thing. When I found this unusual fastener I thought it would be interesting to know where to find them if ever needed again. Also as suggested it may be a custom fastener. When I have a chance I'm going to stop by a major RV supplier and see if they have any idea. If I find out anything further, I will certainly post the info. Again thanks for all the ideas.
