Help Me Choose An Air Compressor

I just bought a 26 Gal Kobalt quiet tech air compressor for my attached garage, and really like it. Price was less than $300.00, and it's a major improvement over the noisy cheepo I had before.

I would like to get something similar for my shop, but the only place I have to put it that is out of the way is under a shelf that is 36'' above the floor.

I've been looking at horizontal air compressors, and there are less to choose from, and the prices seem higher.

Here is a list of what I'm looking for:

Less than 36" tall

15 gallon minimum

around 5 cfm

120v

less than 80 db

less than $400.00

probably you would be happy with that compressor.
it seems high priced considering you have a 3 hr drive. but that's your call.

The price seems plenty high to me also, but any new compressor that I can find with comparable specs seems to be in the $600.00 range.

I just this past weekend picked up an oiled porter cable 20 gallon horizontal at Tractor Supply for $299. I was in the same boat as you, need something that fit under a workbench. It is a lot quieter than my old oil less one and seems to work just fine.

California Air Tools. These compressors are practically silent, but I am not sure if they fit your budget or not, havent looked at the higher gallon ones over 2 gallon. I use them for small stuff. Oil free too.

I had a California Air Tools compressor in my cart on Amazon, but reading reviews made me nervous. I know, most people that are happy with something don't bother to leave a review. The biggest complaint was numerous air leaks.

The other major complaint, and the main reason I didn't order one from
Amazon was shipping damage. Sounds like they aren't packaged the best and are prone to abuse by the shipping company because of the weight. The main reason I wanted to buy from Amazon is the $200.00 in points I have on my Amazon credit card.

The guy on Craigslist lowered his price to $250 when I contacted him. I'm sure that is more compressor than the $300 Porter Cable, but it is 10 years old and 80 miles away. I think I'm leaning towards the new Porter Cable.

I would keep searching CL, etc. Search nearby areas too. Setup a CL search alert.

There's a ton of these older 20 gallon, 2HP Craftsman and Cambell Hausfeld units out there. Belt driven, oil lube, cast iron and relatively quiet.

Thanks to Rlev11, I bought the Porter Cable from Tractor Supply while it's on sale for $50.00 off. Any volunteers to help get it off the truck?
