Right now Im looking at the Aircat ACR802R 3/8-Inch Ratchet, from which i understand has 70 ft-lbs of torque. Im also interesting in the SP Air Corporation SP-1765 3/8-Inch ratchet which has 55 ft-lbs of torque. I like the idea of the non kickback and the speed of the SP. If anyone owns either ratchet feel free to chime in and help me make my decision.

You Pro or DIY?

I have an IR cheapie air ratchet and never use it. Bought an M12 ratchet and use it a lot more. Anything where I can't swing a wrench, that gets used. Won't have the power of an air ratchet but so much easier and less noisy.

Traditional ratchet design far72 is hard to beat. I had the matco pitbull POS broke and they wouldnt warranty it. I still have the $80 rebuild kit it's sitting in the bottum drawer of my box.

Reaction less I plan to pick up the IR hammer head. Everyone will say earthquake, but if your a professional use professional tools

I have an Ingersoll-Rand 1105MAX-D3, compact 3/8" ratchet. It's not very powerful but it's very small and compact, quick and fairly quiet. Just a really nice tool to use, and it gets int a lot of tight spaces that other air ratchets won't.

If power or breakaway torque is you main priority, then this isn't the right one for you. But for a tool that's very nice to use and fits into lots of tight spaces, then it's perfect.

I have the sp air 1/4 ratchet, not real happy with it, strong at first but weaker as time went on. Its now very difficult to switch directions. Granted it was only like $53 on amazon.

The Snap on Far series are pretty good ratchets.

The ratchet I like best is the mac ar1776 - way strong. Rated like 80 lbs/ft I think? Whatever its rating its the strongest air ratchet I've ever used.

The ar778 is just as strong but also shorter by 2 1/4" or so which makes it feel stronger. I like the longer 1776 because I'm less likely to bump the trigger and its easier to hang onto.

Definitely not anti-kickback though. Want to keep ahold of it.

Also has a sealed head which is a great feature.

As is the selector switch mounted on the back of the tool and down lower - if you've ever been pulling a bolt and got an air ratchet wedged you know what a pain in the *** it is to switch directions on almost all air ratchets, not a problem with these.

They are not light tools either, but I've regularly broken loose fwd bellhousing bolts with mine, so its a trade off I'm fine with.

Pretty sure they are actually made by Proto for mac, and I believe there is a Proto titanium version that is a little lighter.

They are very durable also. A friend of mine had his for at least 12-15 years or so before it was stolen.

I'm pretty sure he never oiled it at all for the first 10 years or so. He said it was getting a little weak one day and I ran a little trans fluid through it and good as new - this is when he said he'd never oiled it before.

This is when I decided to get one.

The biggest drawback is price, not cheap. I bought a used 778 off ebay for $125. Decided I liked the 1776 better. Got lucky and found one of those for like $85, both in good condition.

A coworker, who is possibly the cheapest bast..., um, one of the more frugal people I've met, talked me into selling him the 778 for what I paid for it. Now if he'd just buy a new 1/2 impact and quit borrowing my 2235....

How do you like the 2235? I have a 2135QTiMAX, is there any noticable improvement over it in the 2235, if you know?

Yeah it hards harder. Not as fast. Less hand fatigue too. My 2135 tore my hands up from the vibrations. No issues with the 2235

I still have them both in my box

I'll chime in with snap on. I bought a far72c used 5 years ago and that thing takes a beating.

MAC has always offered the best selection in my opinion primarily due to their long standing partnership with SP Air. The sealed heads aren't overly huge and have finger friendly reverse switches. Some models do emit the typical air ratchet whine however. The impact models are a bit quieter and much faster but you lose the pear head style direction switch.

Hammerhead also has its place but you're limited by the torque since you cant manually loosen or tighten. The head is also quite a bit larger than most 1/4-3/8" air ratchets.

As far as other brands I mainly look for
-grease fittings. Generally speaking if something is made to last its made to be greased.
-noise. Anything below 90 decibels isn't too bad but the lower the better. Higher than that I wont even consider.
-Location/style of directional switch. Most air ratchets have that typical round head low profile and generally hard to turn lever. Not a fan. Taiwan seems to be learning with much larger profile reverse switches and SP Air has their pear head style sealed heads for quite a few years now.

Personal preference but I generally only keep 1/4" on hand. I just don't see the point for 3/8" and 1/2". None of them have killer torque and personally I only value an air ratchet for compactness and speed of disassembly/reassembly which 1/4" suits fine.

My brother has a hammerhead and it is pretty cool. I just can't justify it and the far72 is good enough for me.

I have only ever had a 3/8th Mac air ratchet. $40 at the pawn shop years ago and I still consider it one of the best tools I ever bought.

I am not sure what is best but I have used the 3/8" Snap-on and regular IR, and also a Mac 1/4". I have no strong preference. Snap-on are heavy.

I am not a heavy user but rebuilt one Snap-on and one IR myself because I got them used and not working, not too hard to do.

The AirCat 802s are very nice. They're at least as strong as an IR 109XPA and they're lighter, quieter and cheaper. I'm not sure how well they're going to last but of the 3 I bought for the shop so far I've had no problems (we had a lot of problems with 109XPAs and 105D-3s and decided to try Aircat)

Astro 1128 impacting air ratchet or SP air SP-1765

Both are reactionless and fast! Nothing worse than a 150RPM air ratchet.

I ended up purchasing the Aircat 802 and couldn't be more pleased, it's quiet, it's light, strong, and fast. I'd recommend it without a doubt!

i have blue point 1/4 and 3/8. I'm a mechanic so they see daily abuse. I'm very satisfied with them. they are cheap and get it done. I find myself using my 1/4" more often

I run with the IR in 3/8 and has been fine. Dont use it daily, but at least weekly for a good 3 years with no problems.

I also have a stubby 3/8 from SP. Also for around 3 years with less use but have experienced no problems what so ever.
