Help me decide on 72 inch tool box.

I am in the process of buying a new tool box. Right now I have a 41 inch craftsman that is on its last legs. I want a 72 inch box but don't want to pay snap on/matco money. Right now I am looking at the extreme 72 and the montezuma 72. I don't care if it is made in china, I just want a solid box. Both of these look to have good quality and after doing some searching here I have not run into any negatives on either. Please give me some input on what you guys think. For a 72" from strictlytoolboxes, I would think you'd want to get the Mountain that's shown on the homepage. It's shown with a few different prices (and a "too low to sho, call us"), all of which are cheaper than the Montezuma or Extreme. It weighs 300 lbs. less but the weight rating is right up there.

Have you called them up and talked to them about your needs and which box they think would work best for you?

I looked at the Mountain for a while when I thought I could fit it in my garage but I'd have to move way too much stuff around to get it to fit so I think I'm back leaning towards a 56" combo...

The Extreme boxes use many of the same subcomponents that Snap-on does such as the faultless casters and the drawer slides. I called and asked Extreme basically what the deal is and they told me that the are able to integrate quality components In to the boxes with a much lower purchase price by using asian labor to do the final assembly. If I was looking for a box comparable to the tool truck brands but made off shore I think I would buy one of their boxes.

I looked at the mountain boxes also, to me they look a little less beefy. There is almost a 300lb difference between the boxes. The mountain doesn't have dual sliders on the bigger drawers it looks like. The finish kind of bugs me also, kind of dull. I would rather just pay more and get the better looking box and stronger box.

Also the extreme just comes with regular casters also, not faultless, the picture is wrong. The montezuma comes with spring loaded casters, what is the difference? I know nothing about casters really, the floor where I work at is smooth and level.

The springs do pretty much what you would expect them to which is provide a rudimentary suspension for the box which is helpful in preventing contents from being jumbled around if you are moving the box frequently.

Edit: I want back and looked at the link and see that the Faultless are optional for $345. Thats really not a bad of a price for 6 premium grade casters I believe that Snap-on wants nearly that much for a single identical caster. Even with out the Faultless I still think that the Extreme is the better box for the money.

I am thinking the same the diesel-mech, I kind of like the extreme better. I just figured I would get some opinions from some other people. Either way I can't go wrong, got to be better than my broken drawer craftsman I own. I will let everyone know what I decide and post some pictures of the final product when I receive it.

Leonard 95 I have an Extreme box from them and I am very happy with it. I was in the same boat as you. I wanted a good quality box like a Snap On or Matco but the price was just to much even for a used box. Strictly Boxes was very good to work with and it is a good box.

I've called a couple SO guys and they have boxes but they're still too much.

I want a 56"er because it will fit in my garage and that's the size where the boxes get deep enough to actually hold stuff. 18" deep boxes just don't cut it. The price point for these is mid-teens. I can't justify double that for a box. I wish I could, I just can't.

yeah, i saw those. the side box is shallow. that led me to the "hey, what about a 72" base and I can stick my 48" chest on top" thought.

I've just thought of a way to get the space I need. I just need a place to stick a couple other things..... Hmmm.....

For one, those aren't the best. Two, it's not the same amount of money.

That was exactly what I was thinking when I thought about a used box, how the heck do I know if it is paid for or not. Buy new and no worries.....

Well my big box arrived today holding my 72 inch extreme box. First off, I would say the box was fully secured, had particle board shell around the box. No signs of damage at all to the box.

When we finally got the box out, we all inspected it. No signs of damages or scratches on the box. Next up was testing the drawers, man these drawers are solid and have a heavy feel to them. Honestly, the entire box is solid and very heavy. No cheap thin steel on this bad boy. Then, how could you miss the stainless steel top, it just topped the box off. It feels very thick and solid also, probably around 1 inch thick.

I then installed the handle so I could push it around, no bells and whistles on the handle, but that doesn't bother me one bit. Once I got the handle on, I started moving the box, it rolls very easy. I decided not to go with the spring loaded casters cause I don't plan on moving this box hardly ever.

All the guys in the shop where very impressed with the quality of the box, even the ones with 6-10 grand snap on boxes. Alot of them said they would much rather of purchased the extreme box instead of a snap on if it was available at the time due to the quality and price.

All in all, I couldn't be happier, I got a solid huge tool box for 1/2 the price. I would like to thank Shannon at Strictlytoolboxes for the great product and service. I orded this Sunday night and received it on Friday, not bad for free shipping. Now I just got to buy more tools to fill this tool box. Here are some pics I took today.

Yea, I still haven't transfered hardly any of my tools over yet. I didn't want to tax the drawers with my gloves so I put them in that double roller drawer just in case.
