Help Me Decide On Which German Toolset

Ok, really whiny, pathetic problem I have. I'm looking to get some German tools, and have wanted some 6 point sockets for a while anyhow, so now I have a budget for this purchase, and I'm looking for ideas on what to do. This stemmed from wanting to get some hex sockets, which I can definitely delay until later.

So here are the options:

1. Wera Zyklop 1/2" 8100 SC2: This is the set with the bit adapter and some bits, along with a wobble and maybe another item or two. I might be able to get it for about 200€ if the place I found online is legit. If not, about 250-280 by ebay or private dealers. *Finetooth mech

2. Hazet 900, available for about 200€ (sale, 147€ off regular price). It's a 1/2" set, extenders, u-joint, ratchet and sockets. Basically, the SC1 configuration of the Zyklops. *Likely not a very fine tooth mech.

Then I can pick up my hex sockets and combo wrenches at a later time, or I can do that now and get one of these later. I'm looking at like a 600n10 or n12 set + sockets, which will come in under 200€.

So what would you do? I'm figuring the Hazet 900 is coming in at a great price due to the sale, and perhaps the sockets will be better quality than the Weras, and the Zyklop may be more gimmick than daily use ratchet. I can always get the ratchet alone later and be comfortable in the sockets from Hazet being better.

The Hazet:

The Wera:

Thanks for chiming in. It's probably a lot better in the long run to get stuff from an established company in this area. Who knows if Wera will continue making these things in a few years and supporting them if I need a replacement. They are sure purty, however.

Then at a later time, I'll get the hex sockets and the wrenches. Nearly 150€ off the regular price on the Hazet 900 set is nice.

Does anyone know how many teeth the Hazet ratchets have?

What ***** is due to the sale, anything more, such as with hex bits, costs like 200€ more. Unfortunately, the bits aren't what I want anyhow, but if I save on this, it might make up for it.

I'm sure the combo wrenches and the hex bit set will go on sale again. Maybe in a few months, the Wera will have some time-based testing on it and will show whether it can handle being put to work daily.

32 teeth sounds a little low tech for todays modern age, don't you think? Yes older snap ons and plombs of yesterday work well with around 20 teeth, but that isn't what I want to use to do work with, a little to clunky for me.

32 teeth...hmmm has me thinking again...

...but to get top quality sockets and extenders, not so bad to get a ratchet along with them.

Chicken; turns out they DO make a 72 tooth ratchet, check out page # 92 here: http://www.hazet.de/uploads/tx_d3mlinkedsources/kap05_e_03.pdf#page=10&view=Fit

Hazet Fine-Tooth Reversible Ratchet part # 8816 P; page #95 shows their sets that come in a box and they do not have the fine tooth in the sets they offer. I wonder if they consider it a "special" tool that you wouldn't use all the time or they haven't changed all their sets; German mentality seem to dictate a slow "progression" over time, as opposed to quick changes. I wonder if you contact your local dealer or Hazet themselves if they offer sets with the 72 tooth ratchet. I guess you could also just buy the different things you need by themselves and make a set that fits your needs; I like the idea of the sets, however. Like the the adage says (maybe german?); "everything has its place"! :)
As far a the Wera tools; maybe, I would try to find a dealer to go "touch and feel", before committing to buy a whole set; they look like good quality but I would like to see them first; plus 200E or $250 is a decent chunk of change! :)

I just noticed in Hazet "Katalog" that the shape of the standard ratchet and the fine tooth, look similar; maybe a dealer would sell or trade you out the fine tooth and it would fit in the cases for the set! :)

Thanks! For the price of the set, it almost seems like a no-brainer to get them for €146 off regular price. Later, I can look into getting either a mech kit if it's retrofittable, or another ratchet that's a fine tooth, either Zyklop or otherwise.

That Hazet 900 is the exact same set that I have.
You won't be disappointed. That ratchet is supernaturally strong.
The only thing that set is really missing is a breaker bar, but the sliding T will do (and it works great as a spinner).

Seems like the consensus is the Hazet, which is what you wanted in the first place, right? We expect a full review when your tools arrive... ;)

For German toolsets I'd buy in this order: Hazet=Stahlwille>Gedore. All 3 are excellent.

For now, I'm thinking of bang for the buck. Might actually get the 600SPC combo wrench set, now seeing that Hazet says the alloys are the same, just finishing and a bit of appearance is different, then I might go for those, along with the small hex set. The ratchet set can come later, as I don't really need one. Just momentos of being here.

Will looking into the Stahlwille, but also wonder why people don't speak more about Heyco? I have a bunch of their wrenches and they seem to be quite nice. I can't remember who is making a similar design now to the ones that came with German cars in the tool pouches, but I saw what I thought was another company using the exact design on the double open wrenches with the raised panels around the mouths.

The top German brands are definitely Hazet and Stahlwille.
One step below would be Gedore and Elora.
Below that would be Heyco, WGB, Matador.

I prefer Stahlwille combination wrenches for comfort. They feel great, but they're not as pretty as Hazets. You can't go wrong with either one.

The raised panels around the mouths are Gedore. That is a copy of an old Williams "ribbed style" superwrench from the 50's..

I'll say WERA, I love my Zyklop. WERA has been around forever, I don't see anything happening to them. They keep on innovating products they already have and coming up with more, they are one of the most aggressive in the market.

Check these to Ebay offers....I would prefer them more, because here you get 1" extension and much more for your money.

Set 1
Set 2

The last set is priced high, but with an option to submit another price. BUT the new catalouge price of this one is over 1000 $ !
