I am trying to decide where to place an air filter for my compressor. I bought a large Speedaire unit to place on my main line.

Here is my setup. Compressor located in shed with 50' of 3/4" hose running underground to my shop. Inside my shop the hose connects to 3/4" copper pipe. About a foot into the pipe I have a drop that all I use it for is airing up tires. It is at full line pressure with no regulator. Line runs 25 feet to a drop that already has a filter/ regulator combo on it. Line then runs 50' to a series of three drops that I just put regulators on and definitely want filtered.

One thought is put filter as soon as possible maybe right where hose connects to copper pipe to filter all drops. My other thought is to put it 75' into the line right before the series of drops so that the air has time to cool and moisture drop out?

My 1st concern would be since you are running 50' underground, the temp is cooler and that is where the 1st bit of condensation will be. Not that it is a HUGE deal - but there is a chance for quite a bit of water to sit in the line before it (goes up??) to the copper.
do you have a drain at the point where you connect the underground line to copper?
If you really want dry air for the 1st drop, you could put it there.

I do not have a drain on the underground part. I could not really see a way to put one easily without digging a pit. The copper line in my shop is about 7' off the ground.

My only concern with the filter before the first drop is that would essentially be connecting it to a rubber hose coming straight from the compressor. I think I read somewhere that the air needs to travel through a length of metal pipe to cool some before the filter so that the moisture can be removed.

You could connect just past the hose before the 1st drop to remove some of the water vapor. I think just being underground will condensate the air due to the temp. drop.
SO- if u have the filter before the 1st drop (and traveling against gravity into copper), then running through more copper AND filters on every drop...you will be golden!
