Help me find a concealed hinge

First off, I'm not even sure what I'm looking for exists. My neighbor asked about having me make a little bookshelf that would be recessed into the wall. It sounded simple enough until he said he wanted it to swing out from the recess AND it would have face moulding around it. So if I hinged it from the side of the stud, the face frame would hit the wall. If I hinge it from the wall side behind the face frame, it's got to be a darn strong connection to hold the cabinet.

Is there any hinge out there that would rotate out and away from the wall to allow that face frame to rotate back toward the wall?

You will have to figure out the weight issue with it being a bookshelf, but European hinges for kitchen cabinets work this way. The door is flush against the cabinet and swings away to open. A Google search for European hinges will get you there. They even come in different swing ranges. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Thanks for the links. Steevo those SOSS hinges look like I could make that work. Because of the weight being hinged, I wanted something more like a door hinge than a cabinet door hinge.

^ These are really nice and solid. My wife is a GC and built an entire custom hose here in the city where every door was solid wood and required 3 of them. $$$

Yes there is
Look at the wheel chair world. They have special door hinges that go on standard doors that will swing the door out of the way for more clearance. They are not that expensive. You can use 4 to 6 of them to gain the needed strength for a bookshelf

Also. You can use a strong piano hinge but instead of having it at the edge of the bookcase you need to have it at the edge of the trim and the hinge side of the bookcase will just be really thick hidden behind the trim

Look at the automotive world for hidden hinges for stretrods. They are not that tough to make and my friend makes his own every time he has a customer that wants the hinges shaves from their old car

Soss hinges come very large. I have used them to hang 1.75" exterior doors. I believe that's the largest size they make.

For side hinge applications, I always placed additional soss hinges towards the top to carry the weight (3 hinges, for example, with the middle one up closer to the top hinge).

I am fitting out a pretty large library right now and there is a "secret door" involved....before I started preparing the drawings I did a full size mock up pretty much following the direction that was in the link, after messing with the Rixson hinges a bit it worked perfectly
