A little background. I manage a hose/gasket house here in TX. We mainly produce hoses for the oilfield and other industrial applications around here as well as gaskets.
We produce a 4" Frac hose that has a Hammer Union on the end of it for its fittings. Its a very heavy duty hose and quite expensive. My largest customer buys a million plus of dollars of this hose yearly. The way it works is there is a male and female side. One side spins around the threads and is tightened by hitting a sledge hammer onto some nubs that make it very tight.
These hoses are connected and disconnected on a frequent basis. Over time the "nubs" you head wear out and get beaten until they cant be used any more. My customer wants a solution to not buying a whole new hose.
I have found a supplier that sells new hammers in two pieces that bolt together. Great problem solved going forward. I just put these on during assembly and they can just replace them when worn out.
My problem is thousands of hoses out in the field currently. They need a way to cut the old single pieces off without damaging the hose. And they want us to provide the service. Great another sale for me. Not I have to figure out how. My first thought was a grinder but that runs the risk of cutting into the hose. What I am thinking now is some type of hydraulic snip to cut it twice and pull it off. Kinda like a small "jaws of life" but I cant seem to find anything.
Give me some thoughts?
Wanted to add a picture of a hammer union, but am unable to due to post count. Sorry. Thanks in advance for any help on what direction to go.
