Long story short, the old (1979) 18hp briggs on my mower decided to let go of the valve seat. Normally you can push the seat back in and peen or drill a lock hole into the seat/block. Unfortunately this seat must have been loose for a long time as it honed the block ever so.

My plan is to tig weld around the bore with aluminium filler rod. The next step is to cut out a hole. I was talking to an old briggs mechanic and he has seen a lot of that in his years. Briggs had a tool that you would stick in the valve guide, there was a spring and you would basically bore down about an 1/2" after filler. It was turned by hand or drill.

Well I did some looking around for this tool and I don't see anything. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Should be very easy.

Sounds like you are looking for a valve seat cutter. If so, you might want to check with a local automotive machine shop. It is possible that an oversized seat is available which would eliminate the need for welding.

Good luck.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. Never thought of an oversized valve seat, I talked to the auto parts guy who referred me to a machine shop. They don't have anything that will mill these old briggs engines (flat heads). Recommended brass valve seats because the steel ones take forever to heat up so when the aluminium expands it forces them to become loose.

Something like this would work really well as I could use the valve guide to keep it true. Is this just the seat cutter and not the bore cutter.. though? Or can the seat cutter cut the aluminium and create a bore?
