Hello all. I am in the midst of running my speaker wires for my home theater room in the wall. Got a little overzealous this afternoon and ended up in the bathroom with my drill bit. Do you think this is big enough that I will need to saw it out square and put a patch panel in? Any idea ballpark how much that should cost to get done?

Thanks!

You can do it yourself for about $5 in material. The hardest part is going to be matching the texture on the ceiling. I would just scrape all of the loose chunks of paint and sheetrock out of the hole. Clean it up with a razor blade and then add some patching compound to the hole. You might have to add it in 2 or 3 layers (sanding lightly between each layer). If you've never done it before, it might take some sanding/smoothing to get it right but if you can drill holes for surround sound, you should be able to tackle this job.....

 I have some compound in fact.... I just didn't know if this would be too big for it to hold properly. I think I'll go ahead and give it a try tomorrow.

By the way... I was told it was easy to run wire through the wall... the people who said that either:

A) Had a higher pitch to their roof
B) Are not as "big" as me

or

C) Had a higher pitch to their roof and aren't as big as me

Actually it was straightforward... just a little crazy finding myself laying flat across 2x4 joists in a pile of blown-in insulation to drill a hole in the framing waaayy over in the corner where the roof was so close I couldn't even have the drill straight up and down :eyecrazy:

Now...tomorrow after some drywall patch, a little tape for the A/C ducting I acidentally punctured when marking my spots (drilled small holes in ceiling in the room and pushed straightened coat hangers through for easy locating once I was up in attic), and actually running the wire and we should be set for watching movies in 7.1 without the traditional guys decoration (speaker wire strewn across the floor)

Sleepin under my car. . .
easiest way i have ever seen to replicate knockdown drywall finish like that is to buy a can of the aerosol acustic spray on texture in a can, spray it on medium thick and then, take a piece of any scrap lumber you have that is at least 6" wider than the area you are repairing, literally "knock down" the acustic mud that was sprayed... lt ends up looking VERY close to what you had, and once painted to match, is very hard to spot, but its never going to be invisible.

first patch the hole with topping & tape.
after you get both sanded smooth use topping thinned down to a heavy pancake batter consistancy & a small paint brush.

Dab the celing with your topping mixture to replicate your texture wait 15 min. then knock it down with a 6" taping knife using very very light preasure.

topping dries white....joint compound dries greyish

the spray will work too.. but for no more than you need I wouldn't waste the $$
