hello guys:thumbup: i just got some used cabinets out of a buddys rental and my garage is kinda a mess do to no storage... so i need to hang them....question is where :headscrat should i hang them over bench? or should i put pegboard over bench and hang cabinets somewhere else..... im leaning towards hanging them over bench what do you think....i will post up some crappy pics of the messy garage :scared: now i have around 10 uppers to use....i have some that are like 18" top to bottom and some that are around 30" tall.....im leaning towards using the shorter ones over bench and hanging others behind the man door for other things....let me know....

this fridge may be on the move out of the garage.....i think it may have took a **** on me the boys popsicles aint freezing.....so i could put my toolbox there and get it out from under the bench......

again i know the pics ****...but you can see my messy bench yes theres a bench under there :shocking:

here you can see the man door towards the left i was thinking of hanging the cabinets where you see the 4x8 sheet of plywood leaning...the longer cabinets i was talking about :bounce:

heres the back wall thats not used for much......

heres the wall i have my shelves i built from floor to ceiling

were looking to probably moving soon so there will be know more insulation put up....and im looking to hanging the cabinets on a 2x4 then screwing them to wall so i can take all cabinets off at once

My thoughts would be that hanging them over you work bench. I don't think I would put them on plywood even though you might move. I would use a 2" by 4" and place it level along the wall at the height you want. Screw it into your wall studs and use it as a ledge so that you can start laying out your cabinets.

lol i didnt mean i was hanging them on the plywood..... :wtf: j/k what i was saying is i was going to hang them where the plywood was at.....i planned on using a 2x4 to screw cabinets to. then i would screw the 2x4s to the wall...that way when i move i can take probably two or 3 screws and take down multiple cabinets at once
+1, over the bench unless they are full counter depth.

im thinking same guys over bench........is there a height from the bench i should month them from thats ideal? and no my bench is somewhere 2-3 ft in depth and the cabinets are 12" in depth...... also which cabinets should i hang the taller or shorter ones....for what reasons? also what about pegboard....should i put some of that on wall to between bench and cabinets?

Hang them using a French cleat - can't get much more portable than that.

I would use French cleats, but keep in mind it does put the cabinet the thickness of the cleat off the wall.

And I say over the bench as well. I did mine that way and it is very handy to have that storage above the bench. I have 24" tall cabinets above my bench, and one narrow 30" cabinet (threw in there to make up the space).

As far as height above the bench, 18" is pretty standard for kitchen cabinets. I mounted mine about 24" above my workbench to have a little more working room, and because I don't expect my diminutive wife to be going through my cabinets much, I can reach them fine.

I'm also going to be putting pegboard above the bench, below the cabinets for quick access to commonly used tools. I know the picture is fuzzy, but if you look below the bench my plastic pegboard is boxed up under there.

As for the taller 30" cabinets you have, I'd mount them to the wall one above the other for a tall/slim storage space. You could even mount one to the wall, put a top on it, then mount the other 18-24" above that and have a small project bench.

Another vote for the French Cleat and around the workbench. After its up and you see it doesn't work for you - just move them. Nothings permanent!

I like the french cleat idea for the cabinets.....but when you say stack the 30" cabinets do you mean like the cabinets on the ends of your bench? As far as the french cleat Idea I may try that on another wal with things like extension cords and lawn tools to see if I like it......

Beavo, I think you had the best idea.....hang the short ones over the bench and the tall ones either by the door or on the back wall. Typical height for this size cabinet is 84" above the floor to the top of the cabinet.
Post up pics when they're up!

1. how tall are you ? Can you see into the smaller cabinets over the workbench? Or can you mount them high enough so you do not hit your head while working with something on the back of the workbench?

2. Another idea is screw 2 of the 30 inch cabinets back to back and make a Flat mobile work surface on it . Maybe caster wheels on one side to roll to your work area. Check out NUTTsGT garage thread. He just did that with 2 CL cabinets.

3 French cleat idea is the way to go if you are working by yourself.

well i went and bought some 1x4 pine to make the cleats out of....they were cheaper than the plywood......i have another question......the space above bench just is studs and insulation.....i have a spare sheet of osb and few scrap peices. should i use that sheet to cover the wall so when i screw up my cleats i can screw to the osb... because of right now i can only screw them to the studs.... i figured the osb would add a little more support for the cleats instead of a screw every 16".....this leads me to next questiion is there a certain distance between screws?

Screw every 16 in the studs. After you hang the cabinets on the cleats, put a screw through the cabinet into one of the wall cleats to keep it from moving.

Pine isn't ideal for french cleats as it is soft and wouldn't hold up well to repeated use, but since you probably won't be moving the cabinets around much it should be fine.

I went to the lumber yard and bought 2, 8 foot, 1x6 pine boards. I had them rip a 45 degree cut in each one. I screwed the 8 foot cleats to the wall, top and bottom, and then cut the individual cabinet cleats for each cabinet. Then I attached them to the cabinet, and hung them. I would put up the OSB first, and once the cabinets are hung, put a couple of screws through the back of the cabinet, either into the studs or the OSB.

Go to a building or flooring supply store and get some scrap pieces of oak flooring. Bevel them 45 degrees and they are super strong. Just be sure to drill pilot holes prior to screwing them into the studs. Pilot holes in the cabinet pieces wouldn't hurt either.

I think the oak flooring is cheaper, easier and stronger...that's what I would do.
