This weekend at the local flea market I got two unused bench grinder abrasive wheels for a $1 apiece.

I tried looking up the codes online but only got so far, could use some help determining their best application.

The first is a gray Norton wheel, 4.5"d. x 1-5/8w. x 7/8 center.
The product code is 19A100- L8VG, couldn't find it on their website.

  1. Is this an aluminum oxide,
  2. 100grit,
  3. L hardness,
  4. 8 structure,
  5. vitrified glass bond?
If so, what's the 19 signify? What is the best use for this wheel?

The second is a pink Cincinnati Grinding Wheel, 6"d. x 3/4"w. x 1-1/4" center, they seem to be out of business.

The product code is 12A60-L4-VFM.

  1. Is this a pink aluminum oxide,
  2. 60grit,
  3. L hardness
  4. 4 structure
  5. is VFM the type of bond?
What does the 12 signify and what's the best use for this wheel? Is this more friable than the gray wheels and better for tools steels?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Try calling or emailing Norton, they can probably answer. I've had good luck contacting manufacturers about their products.

It (The Norton) would appear to be an outdated aluminum oxide compound?
