Sorry for the poor pictures, but I was wondering if someone could help me ID this Delta Rockwell Homecraft drill press. It was my grandfathers.

Bill,
Sorry I can’t help with ID but I saw this one at an estate sale on Friday. GJ member Shiftless sent me the picture. I saw it run and the chuck ran true.

Thanks, Don. They definitely seem to be high quality. I always get a kick out of some of the mods my grandfather would make to his tools. Usually simple and pragmatic but sometimes ingenious. On the DP you can see the little piece of wire he looped around the toggle on/off switch and through a little custom bracket so he wouldn't have to reach around it to turn it on or off. :)

Nice drill, I have one like it, a tabletop Delta Homecraft 11". For the size you can't beat it - heavy, sufficiently rigid, chuck runs true and square to table.
The quill lock is indispensable now that I have it.
One of these days I want to get a bigger T slot table on it.
That's a crazy DIY x-y table for sure.

1955 would make sense. My dad got back from serving in Italy in 1948 and a lot of machinery was bought after he got a job.

It looks like it could be an 11-110 or an 11-120

Some further searching may be able to find it by serial number.

You can write Delta customer service and sometimes they can provide the model number based off the serial number. Sometimes not. They may be able to point you to a instruction manual as well. The email address is [email protected]. I wrote them back around Thanksgiving regarding a 1" sander/grinder I found. They gave me the year it was made, 1972, but had no manufacture location. They included a pdf of the manual in their reply. I bought a very similar but older bench top Delta Homecraft DP for my SIL from an estate sale last year. He loves it. How fantastic that you have the connection of it being your grandfathers! Enjoy it!

Thanks! I sent them an email. We'll see what I can find out.

Got a reply from them and more homework to do (the other machine referenced is a lathe):

Bill:

They're both 1955 models! To provide more information we would need casting numbers off both machines. If you can provide as many casting numbers as possible, we can then identify those machines and provide the information.

Sincerely,

Customer Care (ws)

Not sure what's to ID; it's obviously a Delta 11" bench model table saw manufactured in the 1950s.

They're relatively common, relatively inexpensive, but worlds better than the Chicom knockoffs.

For forty years, I've used one as my basement shop DP, so I wouldn't have to trek through snow and cold to use the 14" or the 17" in the garage shop. The littlest Delta has done good work and still shows no wear.

For those who may be interested, I got a few more photos today. The casting on the housing reads:

HDP 125
DES PAT 148827

Looks like an original motor and belt, too.

And the answer to the question (from customer service):

Its a 11-120 or 11-130 same models.

Edit: They also sent me a PDF which I also found online here: Operating and Maintenance Instructions

Edit 2: They also sent this exploded diagram:

I finally got this home from my dad's estate (and have had to explode the contents of my own garage as a result!). The power cord - as you might expect - crumbled with the slightest movement. It has been replaced but the v-belt doesn't look to be far behind. The original 1/2" x 36-1/2" original Delta 340 belt seems to have lots of equivalents on the web but prices seem to be all over the place. Does anybody have a source that they have purchased from that they are happy with?

There's plenty of adjustment in the motor mount, you can probably pick up a 1/2" x 36" belt locally for about $10 if the extra 1/2" is giving you trouble.

Hi,
They are VERY stout little Drill Presses!

Had to weld mine up and fly cut the tables...

Also had to get on the Lathe and make a new bushing to put a new Timken Bearing in!

Interesting fun project!

Oh yea, the Bearing in the 11" is the same in the 15", rebuilt one of those also...
