Help me Identify model of Record Vise

I'm digging around to find a good used vise and discovered garage journal yesterday.

Anyway, one potential vise is below. But there is no information online, only a couple of mediocre photos. And I can't decide if it's worth the trip.

As you can see, it's a Record. It's made in England. And apparently it's never even been used (WTF? ). But I can't tell what size it is, at all. Nothing I can reference size with. I don't even know, did Record have little light duty vises? The only thing that might give a clue is what appears to be " L6 " on the moving jaw. I have spent an hour google-image-searching to match the " L6" to known record vises online, but with no luck.

Images are posted same size as originals... can't get any more detail.

I'm looking for a larger heavy duty vise, so if this is just a little guy than it's not going to be worth it for me to drive several hours to check it out.

Any clues to what size this is would be very much appreciated.

ps -- I am inclined to want to get a Rock Island, for nostalgia of my home town. But if this a nice big vise and I can get a good deal, then money talks.

I am by no means a vise expert, but if that is an un-used 6" vise I would ****** it up at $50 and maybe go as high as $100. how far away is it from you?

I agree. I'd ****** up a 6 incher for 50-100 bucks. But what I don't know is if it is a 6" ?

I haven't mapped it out yet, but it'd probably be about a 4 hour round trip.

I believe that is one of those fold up tables from Walmart it is like 2 foot deep and the only record vise I saw was a 6" hope that helps

KIRK: i can't recall all the Record model #'s, but i can tell you that I LOVE RECORD made in England vices. they are not quite as robust as a ROCK ISLAND or REED, but they work. there is also a chance that the L6 is a quick release vice and i owned one once and paid a couple benjamins for it and sold it to a friend and wish i had it back. quick release is one turn counter clockwise releases the jaw so you can pull it out like the wood vices and then when you get it the width you want just put in your project and start turning.

welcome to the forum and post this up on the main vise thread and maybe the English guys will know which model it is. i'm guessing it's a 6 inch wide jaw and maybe a 60 pound vice and the jaws almost look like replacement jaws and you might be right that this is NOS (new old 20+ year old stock).

good luck

Thanks for the input guys.

Could anyone give me a link to the main vise thread? I'm not finding it at the moment.

And those certainly could be replacement jaws. But what makes me think this is effectively an "unused" tool is the ultra thin layer of corrosion (and still visible machining marks) in the exposed metal surfaces. And without a scratch or nick anywhere to be seen on the thing. That's just bizarre.

Yeah, it is on a online auction site. It's a couple hours away from my home.

but shhhhhhh... don't let anyone know. Somebody who already has a half dozen vises will get all giddy and start bidding it up.

That's one of the late models they were doing just before Irwin bought them out, still a good vice but not the quality you would have got in the 50's or 60's but still worth having if the price is right.
