Help me identify this antique tool

I've had this for years and don't even know where I got it, but have never been able to figure out what it is or used for. There are no markings on it. It must count revolutions for something as the tip turns the worm gear that moves the dial. But for what application?

It is not an RPM meter. You were correct in your first guess that it was a REVolution counter. Now if you add a stop watch or other time piece you can figure out the rpm's.

Not an RPM meter. It's a turn counter that may be used for measuring machine spindle speeds. I own one like it.
