So, I got this drill press free from work. It could use a little work, but it does work! Im hoping that by posting a bunch of pictures of it, one of you tool guru's out there will be able to identify it. Id like to be able to find some replacement parts to get it fixed up. I dont know much about drill presses, but this one seems pretty heavy duty, and could be really nice when fixed up. You cant beat free either!

Looks like an old Guardian to me. They were before Harbor freight. Here is mine. Switch plate and other things look the same. It looks like your motor has been changed.

That does look very similar. I will have to do some research on guardian. Hopefully I can find replacement parts. This drill press lived in an ag shop up until now, so its had an interesting life Im sure. I believe the electrical box with the switches and speed dial were added on at some point. Im not sure, but I think the motor might be "stock." It doesnt have the obvious looks of being replaced. could be wrong though. Thank you!

Yeah, generic 60's-70's-80's Taiwanese that was marketed under a dozen brand names or more. And no, that motor is most definitely not original.

But hey with the money you saved, you'll be able to get a new camera, because the sensor is definitely out on yours!

Jaker, I found that you posted about this drill almost a year ago. Were you ever able to find parts or information for the drill?

Hahaha, the pictures were taken with my crappy phone camera. I never take pictures, so its hard to justify a camera. Sorry about the bad quality!

I see, well its a pretty heavy duty general electric motor, so hopefully its good. I am having a hell of a time trying to find parts for this thing, I cant even find generic information on the drill. Do you know any other brand names that look similar to this that I might be able to find parts for? The main parts I want are the long table raise "ladder" (?) and the hand crank for it.

Is it foreign?

First off, looks to be a fairly well done variable speed DC motor conversion. Measure the distance from the center of the chuck to the column. Maybe 10"? X2 would make it a 20" swing drill press. Need to know to source parts from a comparable machine. the "ladder" is actually a rack gear. Yours looks like it could be taken off and carefully straightened. Note the tapered ends, they are designed to fit into a matching taper cut into the upper and lower collars. This allows the rack to slide around the column as the table is swiveled, but not to move away from the column and get bent like yours. Should be fairly simple to fab a crank handle for the table raiser, or perhaps source one from grizzly or HF. Worst case, could hire a member to fab one up.

I believe you are correct on the variable speed. I opened the box up and it was a mess (figuratively speaking. it was actually organized) of wires and circuit boards. Also, when you turn the knob, the speed of the drill changes. Not very smoothly though, it pulses then stables out. Is this a nice upgrade to this drill? Is it just an easier way to change speeds without changing belts? It also added a reverse to the drill, which i could see being very useful.

I will not be around the press until tomorrow, but I will measure it then. Hopefully that will help. Is there any other information I could find out to make things easier?

Unfortunately, the rack gear is broken. One end and taper have broken off. However, I think I can source rack from McMaster-Carr. I just need to figure out the pitch and such. I will also easily be able to fabricate a crank handle.

I plan on replacing the spindle and quill bearings if I can find the correct size. I also plan on disassembling it and thoroughly cleaning as much of it as I can.

I had that same DP. It was labeled With Enco brand from about 1988. Check eBay. I think grizzly marketed that DP as well

I think your right! If you do a google image search it looks just like my drill press also. Maybe I can find more parts or info on the enco drills.
