Help me identify this mystery electrical attachment...

This has been bothering me since i moved into our house. As the pictures show, it attaches to a plastic electrical box in the wall. I believe the cable running through the box powers the single garage light that turns on when the door is engaged. Any idea what it is?

That is a transformer for something. So is the light in the garage in the opener or is it seperate

It might also be for the HVAC as I have seen external transformers on a few.

Could be a thermostat transformer... only seen them in OLD houses half converted HVAC.

Disconnect one of the wires and check your doorbell.

That's true, some systems require power to the thermostat or the internal transformer died and it was fixed with a universal transformer.
