Asking $700 The listing has drawer contents. I am thinking under $500, but I do not want to be "that guy" and low ball him.

Under 500 for sure. Some decent stuff like those swivel impacts, but I don't see much else.

Got some nice pieces but it's up to you to justify if it's worth wat you want to offer as a fair price...$500 buys a lot of tools you need or want IMHO. I am sure all of that would be more than $700 if bought all now...I would say offer $350 , they might say yes right away.

I really wanted to say $200 CASH, but I do not want to be labeled "that guy" who lowballs.

You won't know unless you ask. If the seller is "that guy" that asks too much, I have no problem low-balling. If someone if selling something at a fair price, I may not even haggle with them.

Who knows...maybe he listed his price high expecting the natural low-ballers to nail his target price. :dunno:

For sure, the $700 listed is OVER-priced. Pick a number and make an offer.

I'd start at $250 or $300 and stop at $400 but YMMV.

$350

She's hinting that she will consider an lower offer. He's selling father's "dirty garage" tools. Often times that means its not of much value or use to her, unless there's something sentimental about it.

I would be thinking like $200 tops - go ahead and be that guy - the only guy to show up with CASH for this old set of garden variety tools

she probably means no disrespect on the pricing, many people have no clue what tools are worth, she just heard that they were expensive!

Craigslist sellers routinely accept 50% or less of their asking price. Some without even making a counter offer. You are missing out on some really good deals if you are afraid to be "That guy". Offer a little less than what you think it is worth and settle somewhere in the middle. After a week or two of scammers asking "Is IT still for sale" most people just want the stuff gone.

I usually have success by throwing out a low but reasonable offer, but at the same time backing it up with justification for the price, be friendly and create a dialogue with them, don't just reply in an email "$350?".

Say that you like the set, but a lot of tools look like they have seen a lot of use, you really are only interested in the cabinet and sockets because you need them to earn some extra money working on cars on the weekend and you already have plenty of pliers and hammers already, and this looks like a nice starter set you can use until you can afford to buy some "new" tools. Let em know that you are very serious, have cash in hand and can come at their earliest convenience.

You may ask if their price is flexible, but I wouldn't make an offer til your there, you can him and haw and find little defects to justfy your rationale.

If you want them, I wouldn't hesitate, someone else will snag them up.

Good luck!

Funny story about what to ask as far as price is concerned (short story); yesterday I took my wife to a tool hunt about 45 miles from home. This was a guy that bought out storage lockers and sold the contents. Now everything in his barn was complete **** but he had a few nice wrenches (napa Brand) and I made him an offer. That guy started laughing and said no way in hell he wanted $10.00 dollars per wrench; to which I thanked him and thought to myself I wonder how long that guy is going to stay in business.

Op make a "FAIR OFFER" and go from there be prepared to walk; but don't be ripping off some women that does not know the value of her husbands tools, cause one day that is going to be you looking down from the heavens and payback is a *****.

I dont see anywheres near $700 worth of stuff I wouldn't want to spend much more than $200. But I would have to take a closer look to be certain.

That's about what I was thinking. Stop by and see if you can make a package deal with the garage equipment mentioned in the ad. You never know what else is there you can't see. I wouldn't give much for what I do see. $700 will buy a ton of Husky, Craftsman or Kobalt right now. If that stuff is worth $700 I'll be selling the stuff I inherited.

Swivels are the best thing in the box. If you are in need of a set of tools then this will work for about $200. If you are making an investment then I would pass.

Pretty simple....drop and email or call and say something to the effect of....."I'm not trying to disrespect your items, but, I have an idea what they are worth to me. Would you consider $**.**? I will bring CASH!"

Cleaned up and sorted that's easily a $150 box and there are a good $200+ in tools. If you can use more than half of it and need the box then $350 is fair. If you are looking to part it out and flip it don't pay more than $250 if you want to make a little money.

That unlisted stuff would also catch my attention. I found one garage sale where they had high prices on this Craftsman stuff that was just worn out. Then I saw this pile of generic **** over to the side. They had tossed SK, Williams and Bonney stuff in with the China ****. I guess they had never heard of it. I gave her all $33 in my pocket for the lot of ones I wanted. I told her it was probably worth more but that's all I had with me. She said she was just happy to get rid of it.

It is hard to say without seeing what is there in person. It is hard to tell how bad the rust is. It is a stretch, but I would guess most of the sockets and wrenches are SAE. A couple of the ratchets look like Williams or PowrKraft, not the worst but not the best. There is a lot of rust, not too many gems, and a lot of junk. I would figure out what you value the box at, and what you value the tools you need and will use at. Just because there is a large volume of tools doesn't mean they are valuable.
As long as you are respectful, it can't hurt to make an offer based on what you value it at.

Yes, but I'd do it in person. The sight and smell of a few fresh Benjamins can be an excellent motivator!!

Any rough estimate on just a box like that? I have what looks to be the same box in my late Father in Laws (Car carrier mechanic for 25 years). I thought the box might be worth more than what I think is being referenced here.

Not really looking to sell it or even clean it out at this point. Just curious.

$250 (maybe $300), $700 is silly!!

:+1: There are a few nice pieces, but most is just common stuff, including the boxes which look to be worn, top more so than the bottom.

Exactly like that? ~$200 MAYBE it would probably take some time and need to work properly, drawers not beat/scratched up. The 3 drawer bottom and 10 drawer non full depth top are not extremely enticing for many people. Couple that with those are two of the most common boxes craftsman made around that time.

Need to make a visit and examime contents and read the person in order to make a respectable offer. Maybe she just wants to get rid of the stuff. Would not take advantage of her ignorance, but she might just want someone else to enjoy something like her husband did. Many CL items are way above the respectable price for a "used" which is about 50%.

Out with the family all day.

Got a reply to my email asking for some brands.

Sockets look like snap-on and powr-kraft. Wrenchs are powr-kraft, easco, and gear-wrench.

Seller has listed a few more items (jack stands and car ramps, router, etc.). The new listing now say "cash preferred"

I am going to offer $200 CASH and see where that goes.

I wouldnt do much more than $300. Is it worth more? Probably. But there's much better deals on craigslist and what is posted there is a dime a dozen. No way that box goes for over $350.

It's a little think but don't include the CASH on your offer. It's Craigslist, all sales are cash. Whenever someone feels the need to try to persuade me how serious they are because they are bringing CASH (as opposed to chickens I guess) they get an eye roll and less effort.

You forget about trades, some people will trade for guns or other stuff. I also do quite a lot of Paypal and shipping sales. Have shipped Craigslist items to lots of states and even Holland. Never had a problem with a transaction.

And people telling me they are bringing cash always gets my attention. I get plenty of people that come to look and are not serious.
