Help me not spill gas

I'm having a hard time with those EPA gas cans. They leak. I seem to spill more gas than I get into the gas tank. I have six cans and they all use different caps and systems. I've lost a few of the spouts. None are interchangeable. My problem is I have to fill the cans at the gas station then carry them back to the farm and transfer the gas into; my tractor, my field jeep, log splitter, rototiller, generator, irrigation pumps, chain saws, mowers, etc. How do you guys cope? Thanks.

I have not done it ye but plan to. You drill a hole and pop a tire valve stem in with out the valve core. Then you just have to pop the cap off to vent it.

^^^ Yes! Jerk hoses are great. Most of you would have no problem operating one:D

They are a bit slow but still faster than those stupid new cans and you don't have to hold the weight up. My buddy made his own with a check valve that I have never been able to find and a chunk of 3/4" heater hose. That thing was fast.

Have you tried using a funnel, or funnels? The only problem I have with spills is when I accidentally pour faster than the funnel can take it.

I only have four of five of these 5-6 gallon cans that I fill up when gas is "cheap". If I had to deal with them regularly, I'm not sure what I would do. I grew up on a pretty large farm, and we always had tanks with electric pumps in our pickup trucks. I'm not sure what those things held, but I would say 100-150 gallons. We used the L-shape tanks that would slide in under a toolbox mounted in the front of the bed.

Racing fuel cans with the long clear tube at the top work great. And hold a good bit depending on which size you get.

Except about 50% of them don't seal right (o-ring to top of jug) and leak like crazy. I just had to toss two old jugs from Summit that worked real well. I have two from VP and two from Jegs, three of them can't be used with a screw top and hose. I just carry a big funnel in the track pack.

Pulling the safety lock out of the spouts and adding the valve stem vent solved my issues with these cans. The spills and drips are gone.

Wow !!!
You guys have a massive problem with your gov. sticking its paws into your lives! And gas cans are only a very small part of it!

See...

I sure hope you can stop the insanity soon. Cause our gov. seems to follow yours down these idiotic paths eventually, & I don't know if I can handle it!

So people have had these leak? A blitz 5gal is around 20 bucks I don't feel like putting in the time or expense to make it work.

I was looking here:

http://ezpourspout.com/

It says it only works on 2009 & older cans. I just bought 3x 5gallon cans during the last storm.

I hate the stupid safetys.

Read their FAQ.

EZ-Pour said:
Even though our spout will thread on the new cans, we do not promote using our spout to bypass the EPA emission standards on the new cans.

I think I'm going to buy a few. Those stupid cans have been the source of much profanity at my house. Love my old Jerry cans...but I don't have enough of them.

I don’t use 5 gal cans anymore.
They are just too heavy and hard to handle.
I have switched to 2 ½ cans.

When you can use a siphon I would suggest an outboard motor gas line.
They come in a couple hose sizes and have a bulb in them to get the siphon going.

I do keep an AT funnel around to get past the small tank hole problem.

This, mine has a built in flexible metal funnel and air vent. It was a little pricey initially, but would buy another in a heart beat.

I was pretty unhappy when all I could find were California CARB compliant cans and replacement tops however I love them after a couple uses. So darned easy to use and store if one doesn't fight them. Now I leave it on 24/7 - 365 and when I need to fill I just insert and push.

I almost always just siphon the gas out, using a 4 foot length of 3/8" fuel hose.

If you are confident in your approach, you can quickly start a siphon instantly without getting any gas or fumes in your mouth.

I use a stand or rolling table to get the gas can up in the air. The stand is like those used by DJs to mount speakers way up high - I added a foot square top to the post, so something like a gas can or freon bottle can be safely held up high.

Get a real gas can.

FWIW - I have a couple real Blitz cans that I used to use with the CJ7 on long trips. They are a PITA compared to the newer style unless I am filling a car tank for the first time or a boat out on the water. Besides the replacement nozzles are crappy and fall apart too quickly.

A 7/16 self tapping screw in back of the handle works just fine. Screw it in or out just like a valve.

I've been using the VP cans for years and they work fine. The price seems high to me but I haven't bought new cans in probably 6+ years.

OK just look at this link, don't know what shipping will be but it's a better price than fleabay.

And just make your own spout, you can find all the fittings you need in HD or lowes sprinkler/PVC section.

I have a few blitz cans with valves. Those are plastic. I'm actually reasonably happy with the 1 gallon version, once I pulled out that stupid thumb safety, but the bigger ones ****.

I'm talking about a METAL can with a METAL valve. Blitz did not make that (and they're out of business now anyway). You never need to replace the nozzles on metal cans.

The picture I posted was of a Justrite. They're ok, but my all-time favorite are Protectoseal. I got a few on eBay, as Protectoseal has gotten out of the gas tank business. The "Type II" cans have a valve and a metal hose for dispensing. I never spill a drop, although the hose holds enough that it can overfill the lawnmower tank if you try to fill up into the neck area.

Another +1 for Type II metal cans. They work very well.
