Help me organize garage

We just moved into a new house with a 2 car garage in July. A month or so ago I got the garage organized enough for us to be able to park in it. I am finally ready to get it organized to be able to use. The main use of the garage will be light storage, work on small engines like chainsaw, weed wacker, blower, pushmower, cleaning gun, reloading ammo and parking our cars.

With the pictures provided please give me some ideas on what you would do with the garage if it were yours?







Some dimensions of the space are:
20' 8" wide, 22' deep on the right side if looking from driveway into garage. The back wall with the fuse box is 63" wide.
20' 2" deep on left side
The workbench is 6' wide, 33" deep, 30 1/2" high in front and 48" high in back
Garage doors are 94" wide by 8' tall
My truck is 18' long with trailer hitch and 7' wide mirror to mirror.

do you intend to park 2 vehicles in it regularly?

that said, at the very least, hang the ladder and anything else you can flat on the wall on hooks, higher the better for car door access, and add shelves above the work bench(floor space there is already lost, so use the vertical space as well

I would build some cabinets to keep everything in. Not only will it clean up the garage, but it will also keep the items cleaner. There are a lot of storage ideas on here both in General garage Discussion and in the Garage Gallery. On link is nothing but benches and storage. I'll see if I can find it.

I would buy a shed and move most of the stuff out of the garage. If that's not an option lots of the plastic shelving and hooks on the wall.

You can usually find old cabinets on Craig's List. Mount em up high, close to the ceiling for the stuff you don't use often. My fave idea is to get some of those over the fridge cabinets that aren't as tall. They work well up against the ceiling.

The shed idea is definitely a future investment. Closing costs and moving pretty much sucked me dry for a little. If I move the work bench to the right side then I will have 15" clearance when I get my truck into the garage. That will also allow me to bolt my bench vise on the left side where its supposed to go instead of C clamped like it is now.

Definitely need to de-clutter and get some better storage.

Welcome! And yes a large shed will help you out a lot. This will take some time so pace yourself, do some planning. Good luck!

A shed is a life saver. Then add used kitchen cabinets (have a ReStore in ur area?) to get stuff off the floor.

On the floor itself I use a repurposed kitchen island from the townhouse, repurposed custom made kitchen floor cabinet from my grandmother's apartment from approx 25 yrs ago, my departed FIL's Craftsmen tool chest, and a Craftsmen bench.

Last piece of advice: dont get too discouraged by what u see on GJ. [emoji25] These are some of the coolest and most professional garages I've ever seen or heard described and it's impossible to keep up! [emoji1]

But you'll learn a lot. Enjoy the ride.

Welcome.
The width makes it somewhat difficult for shelving along the side walls. The passenger side wall you probably could get by with 12-18" deep shelves. The left side you might look at slat wall or the Rubbermaid Fast Track wall system (like slat wall). As others stated using upper cabinets at ceiling would be great idea. If you have the room above the overhead doors there's several storage solutions.

I'll second the advice of a shed and some cabinets that can be sourced second hand. Don't set the layout in stone, as you acquire more "stuff" (which you will if you stick around here), you may need to shift the location of this or that.

Is that a tool box between the O/H doors.

Thank you to everyone offering suggestions. That is a kitchen island in between the two doors. I have a craftsman toolbox that was my grandads that I will be getting and restoring soon. Will take pics along the way. Weed wacker is a stihl ms 271 farm boss with 20" bar that will cut anything down in the woods around here. Negative is it doesnt have an adjustable oiler.

I think Im going to save up for a shed and insulate it, add a wood stove down the road.
