So how is it?.

Is it true they run on nitrogen compressed to 300 psi?

It's a beautiful creation  I would say there doesn't really seem to be anything fundamentally different between it and say the 2135 to me at least but i am NOT a tire changer on a nascar team hahaha. I dunno, it does seem to be very balanced and controlled feeling. I just like to hold it in my hands, feels like you got a gold bar in your arms haha. You ever get down to oklahoma you will have to try it out haha. I have no idea on the nitrogen, seems like I read that somewhere though. I have used it on 175 psi shop air only. used it to take off some lug nuts on my pickup one time most of the time it sits in its little bag in a box. I collect IR air tools as a hobby and use them at work everyday so that is pretty much the only reason I chose to purchase it. I would go broke buying tools and sockets if I was an IR employee.

I have owned now 3 2135timax's. The first one was a "Q" model bought online. The second two were bought @ two difference Sears. I returned the second two after I was blown away at how little power they had over my other (cheaper) impacts.

I bought a Harbor Freight 1/2" Earthquake, and it had noticeably more power than my cheapie which is now gone. Much more, I was impressed! I hooked it up using hi-flo connectors and a 25' hose to my compressor.

Bought another 2135timax, and compared again. Still not impressed with this $250 impact gun. So I started doing some reading. The 2135 has a bolt capacity of just 14mm or just over 1/2" when producing its torque rating. The Thundergun copy has a bolt capacity of 5/8", so it will produce its torque on a larger fastener. The 2135 has a working torque range of up to 550 ft lbs, the Thundergun copy only 400, but again on a bigger bolt. After using both I returned the third 2135 and am keeping the HF Earthquake.

I know everyone swears by these things but I haven't had good luck with them. I have read a few reports from others stating they were concerned about the lack of power as well, so at least it is not just me.

I can guarantee you weren't giving the gun as much air as it needs. If it's actually has the air needed, nobody is gonna ***** about it not having enough power. My 1/2" IR is one step down from the TI and rated at only 600 ft/lbs instead of 780 like the TI model. Even my lowlier model on shop air has a TON of power, but on my buddies home compressor that reads 120psi, it's extremely weak, there's a restriction somewhere. My 2115qtimax rated at 300ft/lbs is more powerful on shop air than my 600ft/lb 1/2" is on my friends compressor.

it was $580 before shipping and taxes. That is why I said $640 OTD ...Out The Door...

You wont find them cheaper anywhere else.
Really? Online at tiretools All 3 cost... $580 and my shipping quote was 12 bucks

As far as the "sltg", it seems to be quite similar to a 231c, except the nose cover is flipped upside down, so the 3rd bolt is not blocking the exhaust. 231c=slightly restricted exhaust port due to 3rd bolt. sltg=flipped housing so no bolts restricting.

Advertised power is significantly higher, but in reality our 231c was out performing our sltg. We had both and would use them to tag team large sections of the same sized bolts. Maybe 200 15/15 (head) bolts at a time. Both loud and heavy and did the job somewhat.

2135timax (gray handle) walks circles around both of those, as well as the 2135ti (black handle)

AFAIK, the only debate is mg725 vs 2135timax, but that debate will never have conclusive end, and not worth the time.

That's really cool, I didn't know they were that expensive :shocking:. I'd love to try one some day :drool:/

I have the street legal version of the thundergun at work, one guy uses the 2135 TIMAX, the other uses a bluepoint, and my boss uses a napa gun. Personally i love my thundergun. I've yet to come across anything it couldn't handle and the price was great. Now some guys say its obnoxiously loud, but I don't think its really any louder than the TIMAX.

The big problem with the thundergun is the weight. Its a heavy gun compared to the 2135. If you plan on doing a lot of work where you are going to have it above your head, get the TIMAX. Infact, just get the TIMAX, its a great gun for the price.. I almost wish it did.

It's funny because ALL of the above mentioned bolts were overhead, using a ladder. Gun in one hand, "alignment" prybar in the other to hold the nut.

Ended up switching to an even heavier aircat th1600. Actually less fatigued even with 7lb gun because it was much faster=less time required to hold.

I've also found that comparing your coworkers/friends guns is not a valid test.

One coworker has a matco mt1769a (rebadge 2135timax) It DID find its match against a few shock absorber bolts.

Another coworker who knows very little about tools and has been out on disability for almost a year pipes out "get out of the way, I have a gun that will smoke that weak thing". It did. It looked quite similar to the IR2135. He says he has no idea what brand it is, and a mac tool truck sold it to him before released to the market blah blah blah. I inspected it closely. It is just a garden variety IR2135 (black, non max) but seems to be pre-production with absolutely no markings. Why did it have so much more power? Simply put it hasn't been used much.

I don't know about the Sunex or the FP. I bought my IR2135 for $40 at a pawn shop, and love it! Light weight and LOTS of power.
I paid $60 for a 2135Ti at a pawn shop. Looked like a air hose fitting or socket had not even been put on it. Of course he had $100 tag on it, i kindly offered $60 and he took it (score).

Go pawn shopping OP, you never know what your going to find.

One more thing, never pay what they're asking.

i have an older ir231 that i've owned for about 2 years now. i bought it to replace a napa impact gun.

i love this 231, it does exactly what i ask of it. i've had co-workers borrow my gun because their newer models can't break some bolts loose.

Fair enough, I just wanted to touch on some things people say when they pick my TG up. The weight was a issue for me when i bought it as I had just started as a auto tech (after finishing pre emp where we never used impacts) and still didn't have much in terms of muscle. After 2 years of using it I don't notice it anymore. I also had a hard time figuring out how to select speeds, but I think that may have been because it was my first impact.

Wait, no I wasn't arguing your point that the sltg is heavy. It is. I was stating that I used it everyday overhead along with a 231c. I was glad the day we replaced them. :D Not much fun overhead and didn't enjoy driving those 200 bolts or so each day. Was just ironic or "funny" that an even heavier 3/4" gun "felt lighter" due to better balance and less time required holding it.

The 2nd 1/2 of the post wasn't directed towards you. Just a common observation.

Again, I ask, as you said it was made here. (would like to know if there is a trick to reading their tools, model, serial, etc. to find COO)

I think their USA-made tool line is mostly the quite expensive "universal tool" line.

I just bought a new Matco MT1769A which is a rebadged IR,says built in the USA on it.I decided on it,wanting something with more power and my dealer said $100.00 for my MT1759TH on trade with the extra forward and reverse button included and I took it.My MT1759TH was a good impact although I bought it used putting in a tune up kit, anvil and the updated bushing.

ive got a 2135qti max and it gets beat like a ginger step child but its still just as powerful now as when i bought it 3 years ago

I dont think they understand our Hatred of Gingers, and a lot of them are descended from the Scotch. Ive heard that red hair is considered a good thing over there :wtf:
