I have my heart set on this "extreme" face shield from Snap-On. I can't decide between these two. What are your opnions?

They come with a clear lens, dark lens, and a welding lens. Great for dirty jobs like wheel seals, burning out clutch brakes, cutting with the torch, and welding. They are extremely low profile.

+1, Looks more professional.

If you are welding, the $49 Snap on YA551B will probably work better, and it is made in the USA to boot, instead of China like the skull one. Mine is well over 20 years old and I expect it to last the rest of my life, and I can get replacement sacrificial front glass practically anywhere when it gets pitted. For some reason, I don't think the skull helmet has a sacrificial front glass, so you will probably be buying more expensive welding glass when it gets pitted. Even if it does have a sacrificial glass, I suspect that the replacement glass may only be available from Snap On.

Bonehead skull model is the most popular. guys like them for grinding and welding. I think they are a #11on the shade.

Just curious, Are the shades protected by clear glass, or do you have to get a new shade when they get pitted?

Question #2. Is the headband on my Blue point YA-511 welding helmet covered under a warrantee? This thread got me curious on the model number of mine and when I went out to confirm the model number, I found that my headband snapped, probably form the cold we have been having. If not, do you have an Idea how much it would be for a replacement headband? Funny, this should happen right after I said I expect to have this helmet for the rest of my life :)

Thanks.

Chris

When I was 23 I would have bought a Darth Vader welding helmet if they made one!!!
Heck, I'd probably still get one of it came with a fireproof cape. :)

If I had a choice I would pick the upper. But I have always liked the Uvex products. Who makes these for Snap-on and what's their safty rating?

Yikes. **** ugly. Never did get the whole "Cool Skull" thing. Even those red skull welding helmets look like ***.

If i had to choose between the 2, id say the first one.

If I was buying one though, id go for a Uvex or equivalent.

how often are you gonna change the lenses? if you primarily use it for grinding buy the Uvex and be done with it. if you want the dark lens, wear a pair of quality sunglasses. our shop safety regulation says "wearing safety glasses at all time in the shop even with full face shield.

if you weld with it, by all means get a real welding hood, Miller, Speedglas, Jackson. not a toy.

I used to have a pair of super doper Peltor tactical goggles. the reason I bought it was because it came with 3 sets of lenses: dark, clear, yellow. well, how many times I have changed the lenses? none, before I sold them. the idea sounds good but not practical.

if you are buying it because it looks cool, well, it's your money.

So if it wasnt air brushed then it wouldnt be a toy? Lol.. I'm sure it's a lot better than the $50 Princess Auto auto-darkening welding mask my shop has. And the uvex mask does not interest me at all. Thanks for posting it though.

I'm sure it's a lot better than the $50 Princess Auto auto-darkening welding mask my shop has.

first, you can't buy a Miller or Speedglas or Jackson auto darken helmet for $50. my Miller Elite is $350. at our fab shop, we have the same $50 helmet as yours, but we have to sign a weaver as "use at your own risk". that's why most of us bring our own.

second, you can buy a quality fixed shade non-auto helmet for $40 and that thing will last your lifetime. my insturctor uses the same one he paid 4 bucks 30 years ago.

the Uvex is a good mask, and it's not $175 either.

so for $20+$40 you can have 2, one for each job and they are good at it. only down side is they are not as cool as Snap On, if that's all you really wanted.

I'm 23. I think I can still get away with wearing it. :)

Nissan crawler, Ill be fine lol...

I was asking everyones opinion on which skin I should get. I'm leaning towards the bonehead :)

Id go with the uvex bionic now and wait a few years to buy the skull, just in case you grow out of it(skulls).:lol_hitti I mean your only 23. Anyone else think hes going to make some big personality changes in the next year or two of his life?

I just bought the Uvex bionic face shield with anti-fog coating because of this thread. I got it at Amazon through Coast to Coast tools or something like that. $37 IIRC.

Well I'm glad the thread jacking helped some people buy their uvex. I do like the cool factor of this mask and will buy it. Looks like the skull is going to be my pick. Thanks for all the input.
