I'm looking at Mr.Heater Big Maxx natural gas heaters...
50,000 btu's vs. 80,000
My new garage is 28x30 so 840 square feet...

The 50,000 is supposed to be good for up to 700 square feet but ive had a couple guys tell me it will be good enough...

Do I need the extra 30,000 btu's?

Too little information . . . . any insulation (R value of walls and ceiling), what heat losses are there with garage doors, windows, man door, etc?? Are garage doors insulated??

R-14 / 2x4 construction, 8 foot high ceiling, 2- 9 foot wide insulated garage doors, 1 man door insulated and 2 -30 inch windows.

Was in the same dilemma last Fall when purchasing mine. 45k vs 75k for 768sqf, 10 ft ceiling and insulated walls and ceilings.

From all I researched the 75k would be too big as it would short cycle. Beacon Morris cites 45k for up tp 1000sqf.

Went with a 45k Beacon Morris and it has worked splendidly. Runs for 10 minutes at a pop and then cycles again about 30 minutes or more later. Keeps it nice and warm.

Hmm.. Home depot currently has both the 50 and 80 at the same price...

Is bigger better?

Only if you open and close the door a lot, . . . . AND . . . expect the heater to "immediately" recover and reheat the space - -- think drive-in service bay at auto dealership.

If you generally keep your garage closed up, then you can get by with the smaller 50K Btu heater.

Bigger WILL be better if you plan on keeping shop at toasty 70 degrees in coldest part of Canada winter.

All depends on how you end up using shop. Good luck with decision.
