OK,

So I have a 1000 sq/ft garage, all brick exterior, good insulation, but tall ceilings.

Being in TN I never really planned for heat, but after this winter the cold has been driving me out of my shop when I really need to be working in it.

I am stuck between a mini split, a propane heater, or an electric heater. I do not have propane on the property, so I would have to add a tank, I do not have Natural Gas available.

Thoughts?

Have your thought about a floor salamander diesel/kerosene heater?

I am currently using a tank top propane unit....I had a salamander in my old garage...just didn't like the "noise" from them. My thoughts were to grab one of them anyway to pre-heat the building before I started work.

I hear you on the noise, I also have a ceiling mounted NG unit and it's loud also. I have 1200sq ft shop and my small salamander unit will keep it comfortable. I would like to buy a larger unit to heat the building quicker.

I have 3 1kw quartz heat lamps mounted strategically above my main work area. Its not intended to heat the garage but it does make my main work area immediately comfortable. I kick off propane tank top units for longer sessions.

The quarts are fantastic for short shop visits but I'd like something more substantial to replace the propane units.

I chose electric heat for my 650-ish sq. ft. attached garage with 10ft high ceiling. I only turn it on when I plan to be working out there, so it really doesn't cost all that much to run each winter. Mine is a 5kw unit, which works well but takes a little while to pull the temperature up on really cold days. Once the room warms up it has no trouble maintaining a comfortable temperature. If you decide on electric but want more capacity you could look at higher output units such as a 7.5kw. Either way you'll need 240V power.

I installed a Mr Heater 50,000 BTU natural gas heater in my 2 1/2 car garage, and I love it, although if I had it to do over I may have gone with 80,000 BTU instead. The 50 heats it up just fine, but the 80 would have done it quicker. With wind chills around -30 outside, the heater will bring my garage up to 60 degrees in about 1 1/2 hours.

I really like my heater, and mine is quiet, and allows me to listen to oldies without the radio cranked up.

What kind of Mr Heater? One of those square hanging heaters?

Yes, one of the hanging forced air heaters. It runs very quiet, and hanging it was no trouble at all.

Several years ago I installed an electric forced air unit. It is 220 and I LOVE it.

I just built a wood frame to hang it from to point at my work area. It has a dial for how much heat I want. It will keep me comfortable with ease. I rebuilt the suspension on my 911 during a big blizzard and I worked in a t-shirt and jeans.

The close up is of the label. It just cycles on and off as needed according to the temperature I want. No fumes, and it is quiet when running. I never turn the temp past the 1/2 way mark.

Highly reccomended.

I have a Mr Heater Big Maxx the square one that hangs from the rafters. It works good and you could run it off a 100lb propane tank. I also have one of the new style salamander like BD1 posted they run very quiet.
