If they are readily available to you up in Canada, I'd look for a Lincoln tombstone on the cheap.
Spend a few bucks getting a 240 outlet in the garage and then spend your money on a nice MIG welder.

A tombstone welds but not dc and 120v is super handy.
I wound up finding a good sale on the Hobart stickmate and ordered it. Seemed to close to the same as the Miller version to shell out the extra cash, and I couldn't bring myself to buy something with questionable quality and customer support. Thanks for all the advice guys.
